Mission: Public interest reporting is critical to an informed, engaged electorate and accountable government. Carolina public press, a nonprofit online news service, provides western north carolina with unbiased in-depth and investigative reporting as well as training to journalists, students, and others.
Programs: Carolina public press's 2017 goals were to provide independent, non- partisan in-depth and investigative news in the public interest reach and to engage the people of western north carolina with public forums and meetings that discuss news and issues facing each of our 19 counties. In 2017, the organization published 105 news reports on topics ranging from state politics and the national forests to mental health and domestic violence, from the economy to the efficacy of social service agencies to the prevalent issues facing the state's adult care home system. We also organized seven high-quality free and public forums, bringing together issue experts, journalists and the public for civic and civil dialogues on some of the most-pressing issues facing our region, from the well-being of children to domestic violence, from higher education's impact on the economy to the reduction in labor and delivery services at rural hospitals. In 2018, carolina public press will celebrate its seventh year providing high quality, nonpartisan in-depth and investigative journalism to western north carolina. Based on our track record of success and impact, along with increased opportunities and demand for our work, carolina public press will expand its geographical focus to all 100 counties of the state in 2018. Carolina public press began as one part of the solution to reversing the reduction of investigative and public service journalism. Our readers, subscribers, and donors have helped that vision become a reality.
