Mission: There are more than 6.9 million long distance family caregivers in the U.S. Almost one in four live more than an hour away. Research shows that they spend almost $10,000 a year arranging local care, traveling, and paying out-of-pocket costs for professional eldercare services. This situation can last for months or years. Distance caregivers are often burdened by worry, guilt and frustration because of their limited ability to provide hands-on-care. Over time, the impact on their lives is profound. Studies show that they rearrange work schedules (40%), miss days of work (33%), or take extended absence (12%) from work. The impact on home life is also stressful. CFAD''s mission is to help this caregiving population determine its needs and tasks: provide basic information and decision-making tools; connect caregivers with local service providers; facilitate communication between caregiving family/providers; and reach out to others in the same situation.
Programs: Eldercare is a growing national problem, but the solutions are local. A growing array of public, private and non-profit programs vie to meet these growing needs. Our website offers a FREE "honest-broker" on-line clearinghouse for a Metro DC Eldercare Service Directory (with detailed information on 2600 agencies and programs) in a searchable four-way template. The directory is backed by certified eldercare Information and Referral experts available for phone consultations. The directory is organized by 25 functional categories and hundreds of subcategories (e.g. Housing/Shelter, Home Care) Updated information on these programs comes from CFAD's community partners, the Guide to Retirement Living and the Jewish Council for the Aging Senior Helpline, which maintains the CFAD database. In addition, a secure tool on the CFAD website facilitates the process of posting updated information. This information is screened for accuracy before posting is accepted.
