Mission: Careers through culinary arts program's mission is to promote and provide career opportunities in the foodservice industry for underserved youth through culinary arts education and employment.
Programs: C-cap culinary arts education and scholarship competitionheld annually in each c-cap location, the c-cap cooking competitions for scholarships allows qualifying students from participating schools to compete for educational scholarships to continue their formal training at post-secondary culinary schools. Awards range from a partial scholarship to a local community college to a full scholarship to one of the country's top post-secondary culinaryschools. The majority of scholarships c-cap awards are donated by post-secondary schools, which give c-cap the authority to award the scholarship to the student who best matches the scholarship requirements. In addition, c-cap raises private funds for scholarships.
job training and career advisingintroducing public school culinary students to careers in the food service industry, engaging them as volunteers at industry events, providing job training classes and connecting them with internships andjobs is at the heart of c-cap's mission. Job shadowsjob shadow allows students to gain exposure to the world of work, to meet industry professionals and experience what it is really like to work in the culinary and hospitality industry. The experience of job shadow allows students to enter a professional environment and work alongside industry professionals. It shows students the hard work and dedication that is needed to pursue their career goals. Job training and internship programthe job-training program prepares and places young people in internships. C-cap offered multiple job-training programs that culminated with students getting hired to work at internships in restaurants and corporate dining rooms. The programs help prepare students for the demands of the workplace, particularly focused on the crucial "soft" skills needed for any job and job-seeking skills such as resume writing, networking and interviewing.
college access and advisingc-cap plays an important role in college access for high school culinary students, supplementing the services of school guidance counselors and c-cap students' parents. Workshops and visits c-cap offered students a variety of college access activities including visits to colleges and college readiness workshops, covering topics such as: college research, understanding the concept of "best fit", financial aid options and the application process. In addition, all c-cap scholarship recipients participated in college 101 seminars designed to help them successfully make the transition from high school to college. C-cap staff also stayed in touch with recent scholarship winners to provide ongoing advisement aimed at increasing post secondary retention and graduation rates.
