Causes: Developmentally Disabled Centers, Disabilities, Human Services, Job Training, Sheltered Employment
Mission: Our mission is to provide employment and supports to individuals with disabilities in an environment which promotes dignity, encourages independence, and empowers personal goal attainment while offering quality services to the business community.
Target demographics: Individuals with Developmental Disabilities
Programs: Canterbury Enterprises, Inc. provides full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal employment to St. Louis area people with developmental disabilities, so that they may be more independent, fulfilled, confident individuals. At Canterbury, we work with our employees to identify and build upon their individual strengths, and customize the best work experience for them based upon this information. We offer work that is marketable and transferable to community-based employment if they choose, and are always striving to expand our business contracts so that our work is even more diversified. Unlike community-based employment, and more so than similar sheltered workshops, we offer the critical, necessary supports for our most disabled clients, such as lifts in the restrooms and assistance with their meals. These personal care assistance measures are just one facet of our organization that makes us uniquely person-focused, and without a workshop of our caliber, many residents of St. Louis with developmental disabilities, especially multiple disabilities or severe disabilities, would either be homebound or have to go to a day program. Our specific and unique formula of knowledge, business and care enables us to provide these individuals a satisfying, empowering employment experience in a setting that also allows them to be social and connected with their peers and mentors.
