CALPIRG has long been a boots-on-the-ground organization that erects a gate against corporate wrongdoing, political corruption, consumer fraud and danger, and the effects of toxins and pesticides on humans and the environment - using tried and true tactics like door to door canvassing, student training and education around civic skill sets, lobbying, research, drafting legislation, and media campaigns. This is a truly effective, if not very flashy, organization which uses funds very carefully and effectively. I worked with them in the eighties and into the nineties and continue to track and support their progress - most recently in fighting the mighty antibiotics industry to ban the use of antibiotics in certain foods, a danger to animals and humans due to vast overuse.
