Causes: Bullying
Mission: The Students in the Know Foundation (SITK) is a 501(c) 3, public charity, created to educate students about current issues affecting youths in an effort to improve the future quality of our community. Through SITK, a web based program called the Bullying Academy was created. The purpose of the Bullying Academy is to help both students and educators recognize the dangers of bullying by providing a web-based, interactive anti-bullying curriculum to be used in a classroom setting. The Bullying Academy strives to empower students to make a difference in reducing bullying activity in their communities, whether they individually identify as the bully, target, or the bystander. The age appropriate curricula were designed by professionals in the fields of conflict resolution and child development, and the web-based framework allows the program to be immediately available to any school in the United States with internet access.
Results: During the 2011-2012 academic year, the Bullying Academy program was offered to schools free of charge thanks to initial grant funding. The response from the educational community was profound, being that we had over 1,000 schools register to utilize the program and recorded results for around 40,000 participating students. Of those students that took part in our program, some increased their knowledge in certain areas by up to 50%. In an effort to maintain the pace of our program’s growth and continue to provide a much-needed resource to combat bullying in our school communities, we are pursuing funding so that schools can continue to access our program at no cost.
