Mission: History
In 1882 a building was erected to serve as an armory. In years to follow, the Bridgeport Brass purchased this building and renovated it into a recreational facility. In 1962, the Diocese of Bridgeport received this building as a donation and established the Cardinal Shehan Center. With an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, fitness center, game room, arts & crafts room, multipurpose room, dark room, computer room, library and outdoor facilities, the Center is an outstanding community resource.
Demographics
The Cardinal Shehan Center serves approximately 3,000 people annually, 61% if which are below the poverty level. In the After School & Saturday Open Recreation Program our members racial breakdown is as follows: 59% African American, 28 % Hispanic, 6% Caucasian, 7% Other.
