Causes: Family Services, Human Services
Mission: The black parent initiative educates and mobilizes the parents and caregivers of black and multi-ethnic children to ensure they achieve success. Families of black and multi-ethnic children will break generational cycles, achieving financial, educational, health and spiritual success and well-being.
Programs: Community education, training and outreach. Focuses on three outcomes: literacy, culturally specific parenting; and advocacy. We achieve these goals through classes taught by trained educators at the bpi office and in our partner institutions. This includes parent university as well as the annual parent symposium, several sets of skill based parenting classes and the family resource center. We provided 33 classes of instruction and programming to 2,113 black parents and children. We held 7 parent university classes; 1 symposium; 4 cultural literacy and steam events; 3 literacy workshops; 2 barnes and noble book fairs. 20 families received individualized, home based support from bpi team members. Bpi distributed 100 culturally specific books to children and families through the cultural literacy nights and the annual toy drive.
together we can home visiting model. Bpi's home visiting model combines realtionship-based intensive home visits with group-based support. These joint efforts improve parenting skills, create safe family environments, strengthen parents' cultural identity, build family-community engagement and motivates parents to attain greater self-sufficiency. Staff served 27 families and provided 1,566 hours of home visiting, group, and other direct service to families; provided 481 home visits. Twc also supports families during pregnancy with bpi staff who are trained as doulas.
family resource center provides culturally relevant information, classes, groups and engagement opportunities for parents. 25 individuals participated in our employment services programs and we formed partnerships with 12 businesses to provide training opportunities to families; 3 parents and 17 children participated in our cultivating culture program to strengthen their connection to physicl activity, culturally specific gardening and cooking and active living opportunities.
