Our daughter has been a participant in Black Girls Dive Foundation's STREAMS program for the past 2 years and has enjoyed every minute of it. Between the SCUBA Diving certification, the ROV courses and the Capstone expeditions - she's had the opportunity to grow academically and socially.
Nevada arranged for the Black Girls Dive Foundation (BGDF) to visit Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute for a week. I am an Electrical Engineer and we hosted them for 1 of those days where we walked down to the ocean to get proper water samples, and then in the lab they learned the details of how a PH Sensor works, connected a PH Sensor to their Arduino kits, calibrated them and then discussed and compared everyone's results. It was a very busy day that went very smoothly where the students were always a step ahead.
BGDF is a well run organization with amazingly talented student divers. I look forward to working with them again next summer.
I had the pleasure of meeting the Black Girls Dive group when they visited the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution where I work. As a female engineer with a passion for the environment, it was wonderful seeing a group of young female students participating in amazing opportunities and engaging with the unique fields of marine sciences and robotics. I wish they had more programs like this when I was a kid and I can't wait to see what these amazing girls go off and do!
My daughter is a BGD Scholar. When she started, she was extremely shy. Being around others who have similar interests in the ocean and SCUBA diving, she was able to not overcome her shyness, but found her voice. I have received positive feedback from her teachers at school that she is taking initiative in classroom participation and also taking the lead in her newly added extra-curricular activities, something she has never done. I recommend the SRTEAMS program at Black Girls Dive Foundation. They do a great job with youth engagement and having them step out of their comfort zone,
