Mission: The Biosphere 2 Center mission is to tackle global warming and climate change, earth sustainability, and planetary stewardship through cutting-edge research, intensive and multi-disciplinary academic courses, and hands-on public outreach programs. Our research is conducted via global partnerships with more than 30 world-class universities and research institutions. Our educational programs include undergraduate coursework in the earth and environmental sciences, as well as astronomy. Public outreach involves 180,000 people annually, including special K-12 science curricula and experiential learning tours for schools.In 1996, we became a founding unit within the Earth Institute at Columbia University. The Biosphere 2 Lab is the world's largest controlled environmental laboratory, allowing us to do experiments on a scale never before possible. We are currently testing, for the first time, predictions about climate change and other environmental concerns.We are also connecting scientific discovery with pressing social needs, by offering college courses that fuse diverse academic fields into multidisciplinary educational programs. Our faculty offer undergraduate courses that blend such fields as economics, management, policy, earth and environmental sciences and social science. This innovative academic approach will produce the new generation of leaders and policy makers vital to a sustainable future. 180,000 people tour our beautiful campus each year. Visitors from around the world are able to explore, learn and benefit from our nationally acclaimed, multi-media, hands-on environmental exhibits. A special K-12 science curriculum is available for teachers. We also provide hands-on experiential learning tours for school groups, reaching more than 10,000 youths per year.
