Mission: Bioenterprise is a business formation, recruitment, and acceleration initiative designed to foster economic development and to grow health care companies, and commercialize bioscience technologies to improve public health.
Programs: Entrepreneur assistanceto stimulate economic development in a struggling northeast ohio economy, help combat economic deterioration, lessen the burden of government and provide services for individuals and companies. Bioenterprise has created an infrastructure for the acceleration and growth of new and existing biomedical and bioscience technology-based companies and to attract, recruit and retain bioscience companies and create high-paying jobs in northeast ohio. The program services provided are:assistance in market research, reviewing business plans, intellectual property, regulatory issues and funding (grants, pre-seed funding, angel, venture, mezzanine, debt and asset) at or below market rates. Executive mentors and networked professionals to assist entrepreneurs in the biotech and medical device field at or below market rates. These services allow entrepreneurs to have quality professionals and resources while their business develops. Healthcare business development professionals that counsel researchers and entrepreneurs on how to prepare their companies for the next level and continue as advisors each step of the way at or below market rates. Company attraction assistance to expand and attract biomedical companies to the northeast ohio region. The focus is placed on companies in the medical imaging, orthopedic, cardiovascular, neurodevice and health it segments. Education and training on how to apply for nih, dod and nsf grants and contracts sources, fda clearances and reimbursement. Education and training on how to attract seed, angel, venture and private equity capital to grow biomedical companies and partnership with local manufacturing non-profits who give guidance to companies who want to move into the medical supply chain. A regional healthcare database allows entrepreneurs the ability to contact similar type businesses to gain information and/or have a relationship and assistance in contacting other regional resources such as the ohio development services agency, jobsohio, the greater cleveland partnership and the local u. S. Small business administration office. Bioenterprise's services focus on supporting entrepreneurs in three biomedical sectors: medical device, pharma, and health it. The following are the significant statistics for the program services over the last year: - reviewed 122 new opportunities during the year. - added 13 new clients in fy2017 to bring total active client list to 304 companies. - assisted in attracting 10 new companies to establish operation in the region. - supported 67 initiative companies that attracted $217,855,899 in new funding - held five government funding, private investment, grant, regulatory, and networking events that collectively attracted over 300 attendees. - prepared midwest health care investment report for the local and national audience. In addition to these services, bioenterprise has also developed a number of initiatives to assist entrepreneurs, including:health it accelerator - the health it accelerator is designed to speed the growth of emerging healthcare it companies in the northeast ohio region by providing access to targeted customer and support for continued product and company development. Companies participating in the h. I. T accelerator will receive valuable feedback and insights on their products and services from it executives at leading regional healthcare institutions. Cleveland health tech corridor - a prime location for biomedical, healthcare and technology companies looking to take advantage of close proximity to four world-class healthcare institutions including the cleveland clinic and university hospitals, eight business incubators, four academic centers, and more than 130 high-tech companies engaged in the business of innovation. With continued funding from private health care and research institutions, foundations, the state of ohio and other grants, these services will continue to be provided for free to entrepreneurs.
bioscience incubatorto provide facilities and services for biomedical entrepreneurs and start-up companies. Bioenterprise has a 44,000 square foot incubator. The incubator has wet labs, dry labs, office space and meeting rooms for pharmaceutical, medical device and diagnostic information technology tenants and regional bioscience and community meetings. The incubator also has a special equipment room with equipment (e. G. Sterilizer) that would normally be unavailable to the start-up companies because of their cost. The space is rented to tenants on a breakeven, low-cost basis. The incubator tenants are provided the continuum of bioenterprise services, with the added advantage of being co-located in same building as the bioenterprise team, two venture firms and a government advocacy consultancy. When the companies grow and become too large for the incubator, bioenterprise assists them to find appropriate space in the region such as the cleveland health tech corridor described above. We have partnered with midtown cleveland cdc, the city of cleveland and private developers to develop additional, affordable incubator space in the region. Biomedical entrepreneurs may also request access to certain equipment for a reasonable cost at the regional research institutions. The pertinent statistical information of the incubator is as follows:the incubator had 15 tenants at the end of the fiscal year. Entrepreneurial assistance was provided to 12 tenants during the fiscal year. The incubator is self-supported through rent and in-kind services, and has built up a capital surplus to allow for future maintenance.
bioscience communitybioscience community building positions the region to attract bioscience entrepreneurs, companies and investment, and to spur real estate development and urban revitalization. Events - bioenterprise organizes a variety of events targeted at bioscience entrepreneurs, companies and investors, in order to promote the region's assets and to educate the community about available resources. The growing number of events in northeast ohio reflects the active and dynamic bioscience community. See the event section above. Past events have included networking events, workshops and panel discussions. Topics covered have included accessing state, federal and private funding, understanding regulatory and reimbursement issues, and workforce development programs detailed in the cluster building section of this return. Regional biomedical marketing campaign - the mission of the campaign is to illustrate how northeast ohio's educational, research and clinical institutions have spurred an impressive biomedical industry. Bioenterprise, in partnership with regional institutions, is raising awareness about the breadth and the depth of the biomedical industry in northeast ohio. While many are cognizant of the region's nationally recognized education, research and clinical institutions, such as case western reserve university, university hospitals, summa health systems and the cleveland clinic, not as many are familiar with the region's biomedical industry. Bioohio - bioenterprise works closely with bioohio, a state-wide industry organization designed to build and accelerate the bioscience sector across ohio, to communicate the progress of northeastern ohio's bioscience industry and research endeavors, bioenterprise provides bioohio with information for its statewide bioscience report which is well read in the state of ohio. Real estate development - bioenterprise has been engaged in multiple real estate development projects, including the health tech corridor and the global center of health innovation, in order to make northeast ohio a premiere business location for bioscience companies.
cluster buildingto provide better communication within and across northeast ohio's technology community, advance education or sciences which combat community deterioration, and to provide forums for enhancing the education of entrepreneurs, as well as the community, in the area of biomedical and biosciences technology. Bioenterprise has a cluster building program to identify and take advantage of potential cluster assets in northeast ohio to improve efficiency, use these assets for improved economic development in a struggling region, serve as a clearinghouse for new ideas and technology, and to improve the public health. As a catalyst for the region's biomedical clusters, bioenterprise is proud to be a partner in a number of transformative community projects, including:health-tech corridor - bioenterprise has supported the development of the public-private initiative, the cleveland health-tech corridor. The health-tech corridor encompasses 1600 acres and connects the leading healthcare and research institutions in the region. The collaboration attracted the financial support from and designation as an innovation zone from the city of cleveland, cuyahoga county and the state of ohio. The health-tech corridor encompasses 4 world-class healthcare institutions, including the cleveland clinic and university hospitals, 9 business incubators, 4 academic centers and more than 130 high-tech companies engaged in the business of innovation. Global center of health innovation - bioenterprise participated in the creation and development of this dedicated medical education and convention center. It opened in the summer of 2013. The facility expects to host over 100 medical conventions and meetings each year providing a platform for regional companies and entrepreneurs to interact with national customers. Workforce development programs - bioenterprise works with local community colleges and training professionals to create and promote programs to train individuals for entry-level bioscience industry position. Bioenterprise will continue to identify appropriate clusters for the bioscience industry in northeast ohio to continue to improve economic development in a depressed area.
