Causes: Employment Preparation & Procurement, Job Training
Mission: Mission Statement: To serve as a catalyst for under-mentored adults, helping them realize their full potential by equipping them with the tools they need to build a future filled with purpose and fulfillment. Our Mission in Action: Our program serves the men and women who have fallen through the cracks. Our program works to connect a successfully functioning adult, the mentor, with a struggling adult, the mentee. We provide ongoing training, education and support to our mentors as they walk along side the mentee. Every one of the mentees we serve is starting at rock bottom. They have no job, no home of their own, usually no form of transportation and are either newly released from jail or have been recently homeless. The mentor program is a vital part in keeping these men and women on the path to success. For many of our mentees, the mentor is the first healthy relationship the mentee has experienced. We believe that by working to heal the broken adults that we are, in turn, helping their children. We want to break the cycles of dysfunction in our community by transforming struggling adults into strong parents, contributing citizens and community leaders. You may be asking…can I do this? The truth is that there is no perfect mold to make a mentor. Our mentors come from all different backgrounds and walks of life ranging from retired nurse to former drug dealer. More than anything, a good mentor candidate is someone who can lend an ear to listen free of judgment. If you can spare an hour a week, you have time to be a mentor. This is one of the few times in life where you can make a huge impact and all you have to do is show up.
Results: What makes the On Purpose Project unique is that we are a mentor program for adults. Most, if not all, mentorship programs focus on youth, under 18 years of age, or professionals in the workplace. Our program serves the men and women who have fallen through the cracks. In one year's time the On Purpose Project trained 57 members of the community ranging from non-profit Executive Directors, to potential mentors. In fact, 24 people became On Purpose Project mentors, six people became On Purpose Project group mentors and the others have gone on to serve other local non-profits. The BEN-E-LECT Foundation has promotes community connectivity through partnerships with local non-profits like the Visalia Rescue Mission, Good News Jail Prison Ministry, Love INC. and the Tulare County Sherriff's Dept. Re-entry program.
Target demographics: under-mentored and struggling adults
Direct beneficiaries per year: 100+ members of the community
Geographic areas served: Tulare County
Programs: the On Purpose Project program created to recruit, train, and support mentors who will then be paired with mentees who may currently be in residential rehabilitation programs at the Visalia Rescue Mission, being released from the Tulare Co Sherriff’s detention facility, as well as other partner organizations that supply mentee candidates. The On Purpose Project works to address the root of the problem to heal the person from the inside out. We work to rebuild healthy families starting with the adults so that families don’t have to wait for the next generation to break the negative cycle. We can break it now! A mentor will meet with their assigned mentee for a minimum of one hour a week for six months. Most of our mentors and mentees enjoy spending time together by chatting over coffee or taking a walk. This short amount of time will make a huge impact in the life of the mentee and a lifelong bond is formed.
