The educational approach stresses disciplined lives, sound bodies, and focused minds. About 70 youth attend weekly classes in ballet, pointe, pas de deux, modern, african, tap, and jazz with over 40 different classes offered. Students explore a variety of movement and dance techniques as well as workshops in costume design, nutrition, and hygiene and stage etiquette. They keep journals to enhance their craft concentrating on reading, writing and spelling skills as part of their training. Parents, families and teens attend adult classes. Students audition for roles in urban nutcracker and visage dafrique and perform in other community productions. Has a long-term commitment in supporting women and girls in our community not only as participants in the dance training programs, but as company members, artistic and administrative staff, board of directors, parents, & community volunteers. Through educational workshops, participants explore a variety of themes and issues such as communication and collaboration, conflict resolution, health and wellness, literacy, and education. Ballethnic youth ensemble (bye): in this pre-professional training and dance ensemble for young people ages 7 to adult, participants receive an advanced level of instruction and undergo intense training, exercise, and self-discipline to improve their craft. The goal is to nurture members of the youth ensemble and support them with future apprentice and dance opportunities in professional companies. School performances at the ferst center for the arts: in fy ending 2017 ballethnic dance company, inc. Will provide school performances of urban nutcracker that reaches over 2000 children. Teachers have study guides that provide information on the story line, setting, themes explored and questions regarding dance technique. The guides outline the history of the traditional nutcracker performance, information on our nutcracker adaptation and offer provocative topics/lesson ideas. Free and reduced-price tickets are provided to shelters, churches, vsa arts for georgia and other educational and social service organizations. Dance diversity summer arts camp: dance training and exposure to the performing arts is offered through ballethnic dance company, inc. S summer classes. Dance diversity summer camp is a 4-week program that targets ages 5- 18 held the last week of june - late july. Guest artists teach dance, drumming, african history, songs and music. Approximately 49 students attend beginning, intermediate and advanced level classes. Summer performances take place around the south fulton/east point community including recreation centers, schools, churches, art centers, etc. Classes culminate in a community performance and open house at the bowden multipurpose center reaching 300 residents. S youth professionals as well as other community performers bring an array of talent to the spring through the fall series. Danseur development project: the danseur development project is designed as a creative tool for young men to express themselves through intense athletic training and body movement. Waverly lucas provides one-on-one training to youth ages 6-21 primarily in the east point community. Weekly classes are offered september-may on the weekends and after school. The teachers have succeeded in involving the youth and their fathers in a program, which encourages positive role models for young males. Outreach programs/ lectures demonstrations and workshops: a wide variety of school performances, community productions, lectures, exhibitions (costume design, dance history), artist talks and mini-workshops are offered in all parts of the fulton county community. Thirty - forty performances are given annually at public schools, recreation centers, festivals, and community facilities (summerset assisted living, inc. , rialto, inman park festival, and bowden senior center. Visage dafrique community highlights the repertoire of the ballethnic dance company, inc. And shared the stage and sponsored several other community groups at the rialto center for the arts. This community celebration showcased the rich african american dance culture of the region. It was able to reach youth that may not otherwise have access to dance and cultural programs.
