Mission: B.E.C.O.M.E. Mentoring Alliance provides extensive character education tools with emphasis on developing an aptitude for academics, academic progression and emotional maturity in young males. B.E.C.O.M.E. Mentoring Alliance Primary Goals •Comprehend and demonstrate the roles and responsibilities of manhood cultivating emotional maturity that promotes confidence. •Demonstrate effective mentoring and character education practices that encourages emotional growth of adolescent males. •Establish and sustain a collaborative relationship between stakeholders of child’s success within school system. •Develop and sustain academic progress with standards of accountability and excellence with monitoring strategies, an evolving action plan that promotes success. •To promote a positive relationship within local community between adolescents and other stakeholders by engaging activities that cultivate respect.
Results: 67% of B.E.C.O.M.E. participants have demonstrated measurable success in academics increased G.P.A.'s from .5 to .8 increments with B.E.C.O.M.E. Better Students Initiative. A suspension rate reduction of 18% for B.E.C.O.M.E. participants through implementation of behavior modification plan (B.E.C.O.M.E. Behave ).
Target demographics: The program serves the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area and surrounding suburbs (Prince George's Co, Montgomery Co and Fairfax Co). All participants must be between the ages of 11-18, enrolled in a local school system and reside in designated localities. Each student must possess 2.0 GPA and application approved by parent/ guardian and guidance counselor endorsement. Young men are strongly encouraged to apply and participate embracing their potential for success. The duration of B.E.C.O.M.E. mentoring includes 1 session of orientation and 7 weeks of goal focused workshops. B.E.C.O.M.E. sessions are 2 hours from 9am - 11am with 45 minutes of physical activity promoting a healthy lifestyle. Please visit www.becomementoring.org for more information
