Mission: Neither existing autism organizations nor the government are funding substantive immunological research. Yet autism is increasingly common and profoundly cripples reasoning, social interaction and communication, emotional, motor and sensory apparati. Much of the autistic population developed normally before experiencing a sudden or slow-but-steady regression and loss of skills and learning ability. Autism is usually not seen among relatives of this group, but infection-driven autoimmune disorders are strikingly common, implying that crucial knowledge will be gained through investigating autistic neuroimmune and immunogenetic functioning. Antibodies against brain elements, as well as chronic viral/bacterial infections, have been detected in autism. The Autism Autoimmunity Project, created in October 1998, aims to further these discoveries and evolve effective treatments and preventive methods.
