Mission: The athens conservancy exists to preserve open space lands in and near athens county ohio. We do this through acquisition of land or acquisition of conservation easements on land. We also have educational and planning activities relating to land preservation.
Programs: The athens conservancy has purchased or received donations of two properties in 2014. We purchased a small parcel of a quarter acre. This land is contiguous with other parcels which we either own or are trying to buy. Once we have all the land, we will create a trail head for the moonville railtrail in athens county. We plan parking and a trail to the existing trail about a tenth of a mile further into wooded land. The other parcel was a donation of about five acres from aep. This land contects 2 sections of railtrail already owned by the athens conservancy. This land was appraised at $28,000.
the athens conservancy also has expenses to maintain the land we already own or on which we hold an easement. These costs include trail maintenance, invasive plant control, signage, insurance, interest on the mortgage, property taxes, testing water quality and conducting biological monitoring in a creek on our property near an injection well.
