Causes: Community Improvement & Capacity Building, Job Training
Mission: Athena Alliance's first goal is to increase the understanding among policy makers, economic development practitioners, researchers and scholars, business and labor leaders, and the general public of the dynamics and consequences of the new global information economy. We need to create a new framework and a common language to talk about economic development in the context of the emerging global information- and knowledge-based economy. Most importantly, we need to clearly understand the barriers and opportunities to true inclusion of all in this new economy. Understanding is not enough. Athena Alliance also seeks to enlarge the repertoire of strategies, mechanisms, tools and capabilities that individuals, firms and communities can use to shape their own positive economic futures. Special attention must be given to the problems and opportunities confronting communities-left-behind and communities-at-risk.
Programs: Athena Alliance focuses on two activities, following from our dual goal of understanding and action: 1) a series of policy papers, briefings and conferences on the transition to the information economy; and, 2) workshops and analysis for local economic development organizations to help incorporate the issues of the transition to an information economy into their economy development strategies.
