My life has dramatically changed because I volunteered for camp 20 years ago!! I have met so many amazing people who have enriched my life beyond words. I have grown as a person, and have a greater awareness for people with disabilities. Horizon is really like an extended family to me!! Camp is my favorite week of the year!!!
Not only does the Association of Horizon offer a week-long summer camp for adults with disabilities, it also provides an amazing character enriching experience for volunteer attendants. As a volunteer at camp, I get to spend an entire week with this wonderful group of people. The week I spend at camp is my favorite week of the year; it is filled with adapted activities that empower our campers and memories that will last a lifetime. I love being on the Board of Directors as well as other various committees because I have seen firsthand how important this week of camp is to those who attend, as well as how life changing it can be. Grassroots organizations don't come any better than the Association of Horizon, Inc. H-A-P-P-Y I love camp!
I hold the Association of Horizon very dear to my heart and I consider the organization my second family. I started attending Horizon Summer Camp in 2004 and a few years later I joined the Camp Committee and a year later I joined the Board and the Golf Committee. In year's since I've successfully organized and held countless fundraisers on my own and have become the chairman of our golf outing. I love volunteering and devoting my time to further the goals of the organization and raise lot of money for summer camp. I live and breathe Horizon and constantly thinking of ways to raise money and get others involved!
I am honored to be on the Board for The Association of Horizon, Inc. The reasons are too numerous to list, but start first and foremost with the people that form Horizon. We are all volunteers with one goal: to create a community where barriers between people with and without physical disabilities are transcended, limitations are overcome, new abilities are discovered and an increased awareness of self and others is developed. Our week-long summer camp is the best week of the year for so many of us. It's really more of a family reunion since so many of us refer to our Horizon group of friends as our second family. Fundraising events take place throughout the year in order to offer a free camp for everyone. We just celebrated our 22nd annual camp with over 200 people attending. We also offer events throughout the year to give folks a chance to reconnect. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Horizon and all of our members!
