Mission: The purpose is to encourage women and girls to study and to have active careers in the mathematical sciences, and to promote equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences.
Programs: The association sponsors women mathematicians travel costs to national conferences on mathematics. Through an application and selection process awm sponsors women mathematicians to attend national conferences. The purpose is to provide women the funding to present their mathematical research at the conferences, thereby, increasing the visibility and image of women mathematicians. Participation at the conference provides additional networking and discussion opportunities for the 36 to 40 women who are sponsored annually. Additionally the organization provides travel support to 6 to 10 women mathematicians each year to work one-on-one for several weeks with mentors in their mathematical field of specialty.
the association organizes special conferences sometimes coincident with national mathmetics conferences for women to meet and discuss their progress in the field. Awm participates in meetings of american mathematicial society (ams), the mathematical association of america (maa) and the society for industrial and applied mathematics (siam) by organizing panels, symposia, and workshops to discuss issues of current interest in the profession and to highlight achievements of women. The awm workshops for women graduate students and recent phds are held annually at the joint mathematics meeting and the annual siam meeting. The workshops showcase the work of early career mathematicians and provide opportunities for participants to discuss their career goals and progress with mid-and-senior career level women mathematicians. Forty women are provided with support to attend these workshops each year. Additionally an awm lecture series to honor women's achievement in mathematical sciences and education are presented at these coincident meetings. The emmy noether lecture is held at the joint meeting of ams, maa and siam, the sonia kovalevsky lecture is held at siam, and the awm etta b. Falconer lecture is held at the maa meeting. The women lecture for each annual lecture is selected based on outstanding quailty of their research. Approximately 200 to 300 attendees, both women and men attend the lecture.
awm newsletter updates members on programs. The newletter is designed and distributed to individuals to encourage networking with other mathematicians. The awm newsletter (published six times a year) contains informative articles, book reviews, announcements of events, and job postings from academic and nonacademic organizations. It is distributed to approximately 3,500 individual and institutional members.
supports university/colleges to hold sk days for high school students. The awm sposored sonia kovalevsky days support university/colleges that hold one-day events for local mid and high school age girls. The sk days are planned and implemented by college professors. The program features hands-on, grade level appropriate mathematical activites. Each sk days serves approximately 31 to 100 participants and with 16 to 20 sk days held around the country each year approximately 1500 girls are encouraged to continue their study of mathematics.
