Mission: AWE was founded in 1998 by a group of art educators, museum curators and artists concerned about decreases in funding for visual art enrichment programs. AWE developed two main initiatives to meet this need for high quality visual arts opportunities: 1) the Truck Studio, a mobile art program bringing free art activities to underserved children at public parks and playgrounds, and 2) the School Studio artist-in-residence program, sponsoring artists to work creatively with children on visual and related projects in Milwaukee area schools. As a 2002 recipient of the Wisconsin Foundation for the Arts Governor's Award, AWE is recognized both locally and at the state level as a unique organization that provides high quality, hands-on arts learning experiences for underservice children.
Target demographics: Children ages 4-18 and their families in Milwaukee under served neighborhoods.
Programs: Artist-in-residence (air) programs paired professional artists with 365 youth to work collaboratively on inclusive and collaborative public art projects at 16 community sites. Projects align youth driven planning with broader community goals. Projects may create neighborhood infrastructure, contribute to neighborhood beautification, or tell a story about a pertinent community issue. The air program hired 26 professional and emerging artists.
the truck studio program provided access to the visual arts for over 6,755 youth at milwaukee area parks, playgrounds, and libraries. The program aims at providing valueable opportunities to explore tools, techniques, and creative concepts that are new to the youth we work with. These opportunities provide a background of experiential knowledge that youth can build upon in many other areas of their studies and development.
