Programs: Grocery store: for many years the argentine neighborhood was a food desert with only convenience stores and small shops carrying limited food stuffs and no fresh fruit or vegetables. Families would have to drive or take the bus to large grocery stores in other areas of town if they wanted a selection of healthy foods. The argentine betterment corporation (abc) built a grocery store in 2014 which is leased to a private corporation. Financing for the project was provided by a bank and the unified government of wyandotte county kansas.
healthy challenge: wyandotte county is ranked near last as 94th out of 101 counties in kansas for health. Many factors influence health, and poor and minority families, like many of those in argentine, are especially at risk because their community lacks the resources to encourage activity and often lack outdoor space for kids to play safe. Through community collaborations, abc and its partners have implemented a numbers of ways in which healthy lifestyles for argentine residents can be improved. Provide growth resources and advocacy for neighborhood groups, youth programming, residents, businesses and institutions to improve the quality of life for our community. Abc does this by attending crucial government meetings, participating in discussions about local and regional concerns and communicating this information back to argentine residents. This is achieved by scheduling and attending local neighborhood watch and homeowners meetings.
community events: abc works in partnership with residents, businesses and institutions to improve the quality of life for our community through three community annual events. Serve day is the springtime neighborhood community clean-up; silver city day, the neighborhood pride event and parade; argentine holiday lighting ceremony, which kicks off the holiday season for the neighborhood and provides holiday gifts to over 350 children. These events impact two to four thousand residents and young people.
