Architectural League Of New York

Programs: Public lectures and programs: the architectural league's public lectures and programs in fy17 presented influential established architects and designers, as well as emerging talents. Programs included the annual series current work (lectures and digital programming); emerging voices (a competition, lectures, and digital programming); folly/function (a design/build competition and commission); and the league prize for young architects and designers (a competition, lectures, exhibition, digital programming, and publication). Other programming includes: first fridays, a series which creates opportunities for visits to leading architecture, landscape, and engineering firms; and occasions to explore special topics, such as a presentaton on the future of penn station and a panel on bangladeshi architecture. The league conceives and carries out these programs to stimulate thinking and further the education of architects, designers, and the broader public about the significance of architecture for a rich and vital culture.

urban omnibus:the league's online publication urban omnibus (uo) is dedicated to observing, understanding, and shaping the city (urbanomnibus. Net). Uo raises new questions, illuminates diverse perspectives, and documents creative projects to advance the collective work of citymaking. Uo's premise is that the city is made, incrementally and continuously, by a wide variety of citizen actors, from architects, designers, and planners to businesspeople, community activists, artists, and government officials. By asserting a broad and inclusive concept of "citymaker and by sharing new, exemplary ways of interpreting or intervening in the urban environment, uo seeks to empower citizens to create more beautiful, accommodating, sustainable, and stimulating environments.

innovative research and programming:the architectural league has a longstanding commitment to pursuing innovative research and programming on the topic of affordable housing. We present educational opportunities ranging from major conferencesincluding "tower slab superblock" in december 2016to smaller programs shaped to encourage discussion and interaction, such as the "housing brass tacks" series. We also publish thoroughly researched articles on housing history and contemporary design, including "typecast," an investigation in multiple media into various building typologies, which currently focuses on new york's iconic row house.

sponsored projects:the league takes on special projects to explore and stimulate debate on important topics in the built environment. We also provide opportunities for individuals and teams to pursue significant self-generated design and research projects in architecture, art, and urbanism. Among the varied projects fostered during the fy17 program year were investigations of architects roger anger, nicholas quintana, and dimitris pikionis; historical research on the architecture of new york's chinatown; and protoypes for gender neutral bathrooms.
