Causes: Botanical Gardens & Arboreta, Environment
Mission: A 24-acre enlargement of the arnold arboretum, a boston city park, was publicly announced on march 13, 1996 by the former mayor thomas m. Menino, the first enlargement of this park in 101 years. The organization is involved in protecting and enhancing public enjoyment in the arboretum lands.
Programs: The organization (apc) hosted one bird walk and two clean ups, one in the fall and one in the spring as part of mayor walsh's "love your block" with volunteers from the apc and the neighborhood. As part of the apc's efforts related to extending the path, the apc has continued the plan to construct an accessible path behind the wall and create a new welcoming entrance from underserved neighborhoods adjacent to the arboretum. The boston public works put the improvements at the intersection of south street and bussey street out to bid and the construction will be done by the end of 2018. The plan involves one new crosswalk for improving safety at this heavily used intersection. The blackwell footpath extension will connect to this crosswalk and link to a second path extension up over peter's hill to the roslindale commuter rail station. The horsley witten group prepared design development documents for this unified path system. The apc has coordinated with the arboretum, the boston transportation department (btd), the mbta, walkup roslindale, rozzie bikes, and the livable street alliance/emerald network. The designed unified path complies with the americans with disabilities act. It will be 10 feet wide and will accommodate both walkers and bikers. A boardwalk about 200 feet long will connect the path in the bussey brook meadow to the crosswalk being constructed at the intersection of bussey and south streets next to the gate at the base of peters hill. The apc assisted btd with the preparation of a grant application to dcr's recreational trails program for funds to further the first phase of the path project.
