My name is Shira James and I am one of the directors of Unity Salsa, a new department within Animals and Humans in Disaster. Unity Salsa’s mission is to preserve and promote the art of salsa music and dancing while offering hope and help to those in need.
My dance partner and I are so fortunate to have met CJ, the CEO and President of Animals and Humans in Disaster this past summer. CJ was able to see our vision and agreed to mentor us as we develop our program and build this department. We have a shared belief that dance can be used therapeutically to help develop resilience to those in crisis.
This collaboration has opened many doors for us with Unity Salsa. We have recently started creating uplifting dance experiences for individuals experiencing homelessness. It has been incredible to provide participants with an opportunity to find joy through music and dance. This is just the beginning for us! With the help of Animals and Humans in Disaster and CJ’s mentorship we are looking forward to expanding our ability to give the gift of dance to those struggling with homelessness and substance abuse. I am forever grateful for CJ and this amazing non-profit organization!
I have enjoyed helping out for this cause! I think it’s awesome they help out all of Arizona! People face life altering events often and having help can make all the difference. The people behind this organization are so kind for what they do and have been doing it for so long! I can’t imagine the relief they bring and only see it continuing for another 25 years.
My favorite non-profit organization. I have had the privilege of meeting CJ At quite a few events. Recently we did a stand down in Prescott Arizona for veterans. This organization provides support for both the veteran and their pets. So many organizations just focus on the human, this organization focuses on both the human and the pet. Veterans rely so often on their pets for both physical and emotional support. Thank you CJ and your organization for all that you do! Top notch non-profit!!!!

Did you know that this organization is an all volunteer nonprofit, serving Arizona?
I am a leadership volunteer for This nonprofit and am amazed at how they have pulled through the pandemic and kept giving their services. They realized how a top down leadership structure was not enough is a real disaster like the Pandemic, where there no no where to escape . We all have to be leaders for each other.
Helping the seniors, homebound, chronically/terminally sick-injured, disabled veterans and so many more struggling. to make it through these tough times.
I talked to a Disaster of Arizona State Department of Public Health Services 2 week ago. Their real time statistics are showing the numbers are rising already of people of every kind of group vulnerable or main stream who are suffering from helplessness, hopelessness, depression, despair, even thoughts of suicide.
Please, wont you add a line or two to make your own review to help this worthy nonprofit to continue to survive and thrive?
This nonprofit is amazing! They go the extra mile to provide services for Veterans & others in need. They don't stop when they are tired, they continue to go the extra mile, to the next event to provide services to those in need. What amazing, dedicated people. I am so happy they are here!
This wonderful non profit provided our organization with 1200 lbs of dog food so that low income individuals could keep their pets
These people work so hard every single day to accomplish their mission. CJ is a force of nature. 4 paws and 2 thumbs up!
I follow this group on Facebook. Without people like this people and their pets suffer. We are blessed, BLESSED, to have people that care for others and animals like this.
This nonprofit exceeds all expectations! They go above and beyond every single day to serve those in need. We have worked with them at Veteran's Resource Fairs and Stand Down Events. Their generosity and caring are unmatched. We honored to work them. They tirelessly work in many communities serving those in need. What an amazing group!

What an amazing Non-profit! Cj and her team fill such a needed space with her organization. Helping animals and people stay together when going through tough times is often overlooked. Pets are family and keeping everyone together is crucial to making it through any difficult time. Often overlooked by many its this bond we have with our pets who sometimes become our only family and support. She is fighting to keep these bonds for anyone in need. Thank you Animals and Humans in Disaster for fighting this important battle.
Dedication, ever-present, and always putting the needs of the community first, this organization has gone above and beyond for so many in our communities. When things seemed at their worst they are always present to help. BRAVO!

CJ and ALL are dedicated and tireless in their efforts They are the lifeline that is so needed especially now God Bless You All
Our office, Fixing Feet Institute has now worked with CJ Anderson and this group for 4 yrs. Every year we run a donation drive in our office, and our patients respond with all kinds of donations. This year CJ asked us the be the official NWValley drop off site for donations, and we enthusiastically accepted. CJ works tirelessly for the animals even though her health is not the best. The animals and their owners always come first. We chose this charity to support because of their efforts to keep animals in their homes and out of shelters. I personally am looking forward to many more years of working with CJ and this worthy organization.

Our office, Fixing Feet Institute, has partnered with this organization for 2 years now, in that we run a donation drive for them every March and April. We have been so impressed with the work they do, and the outpouring of support from our patients, that we have decided to add this worthy organization to our annual list which means we will continue to run a donation drive ever year. CJ anderson who runs the organization is the most devoted person I have met. There are many organizations helping to get animals adopted, but this organization helps keep pets in their homes with their loving families so they don't end up in shelter needing to be adopted,
I have volunteered and helped with bags of food given out for Veterans at various events.
I am proud of all the good work this organization does for an varied assortment of agencies and individuals. CJ is the most amazing leader I have ever met! She has a heart bigger than she is. She seams to never tire when it comes to helping all the hungry animals.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to CJ Anderson as Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry's CEO for her heart towards pets and their owners and our community.
I have never been involved in such a fulfilling role as a board member to this loving and caring nonprofit.
I have seen the qualtity of help given to so many in need in our community. The blessings given out can never match the blessings received by those of us that volunteer.
I have seen first hand how people in need will not speak up for themselves but will speak out for their beloved pets. Since Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry teams up with groups of organizations that help people in need we can serve a larger number of communities.
We currently provide disaster services in addition to our other services to not only Arizona but adjoining states as well.
Respectfully Submitted,
Pamela R. Checkley

Pam, as an officer of our organization, you hold the heart of Empty Bowl Pets; because the Heart knows the truth of what is service. You make sure that we are not so caught up in non-profit dogma, that we lose sight of the people (and their pets) that we are working to help stand back up on their feet and into a sustainable life - whether because of illness, disability or economic challenges!
Whenever I needed help with animal food, they were always there to assist me! I appreciate them more then they know. They helped me get by many times when I was down on my luck.
Thank you again from all the furbabies!
Wonderful organization. Always the first to offer a helping hand to our Veterans and their beloved pets at the Cochise County Veteran Resource fair. Thank you CJ for all you do!
I had the opportunity to work with Empty Bowl when I lived in Phoenix. They are a wonderful organization supporting so many pets in need. It was a pleasure to be able ro work with them and make a donation to a greatly needed charity.
The commitment and reach of Animals (and Humans) in Disaster impact many members of the community. Their help for those with the serious need of assistance with their animals, across all counties in our state, makes a true difference to those people often forgotten. Partnering with humanitarian aid groups to help the animals involved brings emotional relief to the pet parent and allows them to better focus on improving their own lives.

As a volunteer have seen Animals and Humans in Disaster provide pet food and supplies and access to future pet resources for some of the most vulnerable in our community and the pets they so dearly love. They offer assistance to the chronically in need as well as those experiencing a temporary personal crisis. This organization works hard to get pet supplies where it is truly needed in Az. Animals (and Humans) in Disaster also stands ready to step in for larger scale events such as wildfires as well. Support is given also by partnering with other agencies for greater impact. The is a wonderful nonprofit that serves a big need in the community.

Empty Bowl Pet Food Panty is an wonderful organization for animals and the community alike. The need is great for both and CJ Anderson and her crew work their hearts out to get the job done. I was honored to be able to help out at the Arizona Stand down with CJ and saw so many animals get medical attention, food, supplies and other resources so these animals can stay in their home with the owners who love them.
Wonderful organization that provides services for so many underserved populations throughout Arizona.
From domestic violence victims to military veterans to homeless individuals and those just trying to make ends meet, this group helps them all, no judgement.
Also extremely important is their role in disaster planning and recovery.
I'm so proud to be able to play a small role in this very inspiring and worthy organization.
CJ and Steve went out of their way to secure pickup of a donation from my home (in 100+ degree weather). Amazingly dedicated people leading hard work for an amazing cause.
I'm a recently disabled veteran, who can no longer work or drive. I have 6 dogs and 3 cats and without CJ and Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry I would have needed to rehome my pets because SSDI is only enough to pay the rent. I love my animals but I love this nonprofit just as much, it is outstanding.
CJ is an amazing organizer who is ready at anytime to help anyone in true need. She is resourceful, kind, knowledgeable and trustworthy. I have seen her in action many times and her energy and enthusiasm is endless when it comes to her passion of helping animals and people in need. Her organization is above and beyond and is worthy of the highest recognition. Thank you CJ for being such an amazing advocate here in the valley of the sun.
I work for an organization that donates a lot of animal food to this organization. They have been generous in sharing some of the stories of their hard work and success stories with us and I am so happy to be a part of the process. I look forward to hopefully many more success stories and am excited to continue this partnership.
When i first started getting into volunteering and starting to help animals, I worked with CJ at a booth and took donations to her house. They always made me feel no matter how small the donations, they were always welcome and always thankful.
I learned more about them and what they do and know these are the things that are done when you really care about the animals cuz there’s nothing but hard work to make this magic happen. Way to go guys
Empty Bowl Pet Food Panty helps to fill such a gap in human and animal care in the community, mainly by getting pet food where it is needed, to the pets of the underserved and vets. They often partner with other organizations that provide services to the needy and lend a hand in times of crisis. CJ Anderson and her group are devoted to helping others in Arizona.
I've been following the amazing work of the nonprofit for several years now. They work tirelessly to help both pets and their families during the most difficult times in their lives. The support they provide to the community is priceless and every event they attend I always make sure to help with a donation that I'm 100% sure will go to help where it's most needed. This is a charity you can trust that really makes an impact in the world on a daily basis.
This nonprofit serves so many people! They go when it's not easy or convenient. They go because they care that much! Thank you for all you do Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry! You are making a difference in the lives of both people & pets!

I have volunteered for Empty Bowl about 2 years ago. I enjoy helping at the Az Veterans Stand Down all across az HopeFest, and many more. The CEO is most inspiring and Fearce. She gets it done. This organization also helps other organizations as they can. I'm so proud to be a part of this wonderful non profit. Nothing feels better than giving back. Mostly helping people keep there pets. Keep up the rewarding work.
It has truly been a wonderful experience to be newly elected to the board in 2018. Giving back to the community is always rewarding and though this non-profit I get to teach emergency preparedness as well as provide real help in times of crisis.
Don't forget your local charities in all months of the year, you never know when you may be on the receiving end of support!
I have known cj for about 4 years. And no matter the challenges ive faced and the amount of screw ups I've accomplished all on my own cj has never once left me to pick my self up alone. .... each and every time I am finally done with what ever mess I make for my self shes always there to share her advice, her hug, her time, her home her resources, he knowledge, her ear, her smile and her support no matter how long it takes for me to be finished hurting my self shes always there when i'm done and I couldn't be more thankful grateful and honored to be called a friend of hers..... this woman has taught me so much about life and being successful and how to be hopeful after disaster, and how to be strong good God this woman has strength beyond that of any person I have ever met in my life..... thank you CJ you have changed my life and all the dogs ive saved forever.... with out her 200+ dogs over the last 3 years wouldn't have had food, beds, toys , medications, or me to have had the ability to rescue as I have.... shes incredible and her organization shows her heart and soul with its beauty and success!!!!!! Thank you Cj!!!!!
My house burned down leaving my family and pets displaced. Cj reached out to me and supplied me with dog and cat supplies. Not having to worry about where my dog's next meal was coming from was a giant step in getting my life closer to normal. I will be eternally grateful.
I have referred many people to this group. Those who found themselves on hard times & have always heard that they were able to help. No judgement just help. Thank you for your dedication
These guys are great I have been in a domestic violence relationship and that ended 3 weeks ago. I have two small dogs and one of them has to eat soft dog food due to his under bite. I had nothing to feed them, no I'd. And no bill in my name. I emailedbthe CEO. He was very helpful to me and found my place , give me a phone number and I am able to make things better for my dogs Ringo and bowdie. Thank you so much for making this happen for me. I am so grateful. Things are starting to pull together for me. Its going to be a long road for recovery and these people are making things easier for me. Thank u and god bless each one of you.
When I met a veteran who needed help with pet food and supplies, these guys were there. When I worked with a domestic violence victim who needed help with her dogs in a terrible situation, these guys were there. When a social worker friend needed resources for her homeless clients with pets, these guys were there. These guys are amazing. I can't count how much they have helped, serving a need that not many serve.
This group does so much with so little, to ensure that pets don't go without, it's amazing. I've volunteered with a few animal-centric groups and know how much effort it takes to pull these kinds of donations together on a day-in, day-out basis, and then to distribute them properly. It's no easy feat what they manage!
The animals in Yarnell and Peeples Valley were very grateful to this organization for their generous donations to the community after the Yarnell Fire
CJ and Empty Bowl do an excellent job not only helping people in need but their animals as well. Empty Bowl has helped out in many crisis situations to prevent people from having to choose whether to either feed their animal companions or give them up altogether. Empty Bowl is a valuable resource in the animal rescue community and also has come to the aid of other animal rescue organizations needing help or advice as well. Empty Bowl is definitely a benefit to the community.
When I first moved to AZ. CJ was one of the first people I came in contact with. Not sure how, maybe because I had taken in a feral kitten--don't remember. But seeing her passion and all the good she does each and every day was a life changing for me. I have been in rescue now for 5 years, what a great way to pay it forward to those that can't take care of themselves; the furs.
I am impressed with everything they do to help the animals and people of our state. They don't ever turn a blind eye to those in need
Without Empty Bowl many people would have no where to turn in times of need for their pets. And this may be the only available option the owner has otherwise many would have to give up their beloved companion to an already overfilled and understaffed shelter system here in Maricopa County.
Please donate when possible and lets keep their doors open.
I am a nurse and see many people in need. They never turn anyone away. Love this group help so many in need!!!
This is a wonderful organization!! I have met and befriended CJ Anderson several years ago! She is an awesome leader and does wonderful work here!!
Helping animals in disaster (AID) is an awesome cause; helping to reunite lost animals, providing food, providing any necessary Veterinary care and, many other services.

CJ Anderson is a compassionate, hard working, knowledgeable woman who works endlessly in her support of humans and animals via The Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry and Animals in Disaster - two very vital organizations. Working tirelessly to educate people on the betterment of animal care and survival, CJ is extremely diligent in "getting the job done" resulting in the best possible outcome. Ten paws up for The Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry and Animals in Disaster. Licks and wags for CJ.
AID/Empty Bowl assisted Tempe CERT in pet first aid and pet CPR training to CERT volunteers and members. This enables citizens, in times of disaster, to not only to take care of their human families but also animal families. We have a houseful of critters. My hubby, I, and our 2 children have all taken the class. It brought awareness to the importance in preparedness and we are much more thoughtful when we plan for potential disasters and/or evacuation. My hubby and son had the pleasure to help AID/Empty Bowl in a few occasions (collecting and unloading pet foods and stocking the storage space) and got to know its volunteers. These are dedicated people who are doing all they can and some more in order to help folks who would put their pets first before themselves during difficult times. Their services, in my opinion, bring so much relief and happiness to those that need it.
I've been a volunteer for several years and have never run into a more devoted group of people. On a shoestring budget this organization performs miracles. It respects its volunteers and gives credit where credit is due. No matter what the emergency or need, someone there will find a way to help regardless of how inconvenient the timing may be. What a much better world we would live in if there were more groups like this for both people and their animal companions.

Over the years I've volunteered with many organizations. Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry is one the most far-reaching AZ ones. It has a hands-on, global approach helping people get back on their feet and keep their companion animals. EBPFP is not simply a here's a bag of food for your pet and then good-bye. It really cares. If it takes a village to raise a child, then it takes Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry to raise hope for the most needy among us. It is an honor and privilege to be part of this not-for-profit group.

We have been blessed to have people like you to help guide us on our way, and to give us access to the community resources that help make such a difference. Hope and will are the two (not so) secret agendas that we are striving to bring to communities, because as neighbor helping neighbor, this is the only way to get though to people who are used to being the givers, not receiving help!
Empty bowl is a wonderful organization serving our homeless, veterans and community providing pet food, spay neuter vouchers and other services. Can't say enough God things!
Empty bowl pantry has helped me a number of times with getting food for my kitties. If it went for them I don't know what I would have done
CJ has put her heart into EBPFP and it shows . and so does the board
i became an vollenteer about 2 years or so ago . i am in a wheelchair and in my apartments are elderly and disabled that have pets to keep them happpy and be able to cope with personal issues . i have seen and helped load trucks andcars full of pet food for other organizations . as well i help get food for those here , and get it sent to those who need it . i have seen several homeless vets and thier pets that need the help with thier companions .
i have been as well trying to get more active in helping other animal rescues and shelters . but as in a power chair , i seem to be over looked . and in some ways i can see the concerns . as i might not see a tail under my wheels , and that would not be good .
EBPFP has helped even myself be able to get out and help how i can , if even in the chair .. that too has been of great help to me as well .
thank you EBPFP and the board and you too CJ
I am so impressed with CJ Anderson and the Empty Bowl Pet Food. It was a privilege to volunteer at the Veterans Stand Down and see first hand what this great organization does.
My father was a WWII Vet so I appreciate what CJ does for our Veterans and their dogs. I look forward to volunteering more this year. Thank you CJ for everything you do and your great Spirit :)
I am really impressed with this organization. I appreciate the support of veterans in need. As a widow of a 3 war veteran, I appreciate the support of those in need. Keep up the good work in serving those who put their life on the line to keep our country free.
I came upon Empty Bowl a few years ago working with another non-profit organization... and I fell in love with the idea that people could keep their pets in times of hardships. I have been distributing pet food for a few years now, and it has been an honor to be part of their volunteer staff. I can't say enough about the wonderful board and volunteers that I get to work with and all the amazing people I have met along the way! I hope to continue to work with everyone ( staff and clients ) for a long time.
Empty Bowl is SUCH an amazing organization..... They really do help those in need!!! The countless hours of work behind the scenes is what makes them successful and of course ALL of their GIANT hearts!!! Thank you for all you do for our community!!!
I started with Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry as a volunteer in 2011, just to help CJ out and because it's such a worthy cause to volunteer for. It's been a lot of fun and the growth for such a small agency (at least it was small to begin with) has been amazing. I accepted a position on the Board in 2012, mostly because the agency needed help during this period of growth.
It's been very rewarding to see the various facets of the agency. One day we're unloading several dozen pallets of dog and cat food by hand with the help of a lot of volunteers. Then another day, we see the same food going out to supply food banks, churches, and to help disadvantaged military veterans. On the weekends, we're often at public events, talking about what the agency does, to raise a small amount money to pay for the coming week's activities. Most of our expenses are to pay for storage units and truck rentals to move the food. There's work for just about anyone who wants to volunteer doing whatever business activities you like to do. Some people write grants, some manage volunteers, and others distribute the food and other animal supplies to the receivers of the donations.
So the pets can stay with their owner families in cases where many of them would probably not have survived at all on the streets. In the process of finding help for their pets, a lot of people also get the help they really need. We work with food banks and churches for a reason. People will often ask for help for their pets when they won't ask for help for themselves.
I am grateful to empty bowl. I have a very ill husband at home, several people living in my home and am head of household. I was given a couple of rescue animals that were abused. I was having great financial difficulties. Empty bowl was right there ensuring I was able to feed the animals I had. They gave me enough food that I was able to share with a couple of people that had run into hard times as well. They are a wonderful organization that helps to keep pets with their owners rather than in the animal shelter creating more of a problem.

We are so glad to be of assistance! In our last IRS 990, we were able to give about $665,000 worth of goods and petfood in Arizona on only $19.500 of cash donations (went primarily to storage, moving trucks, and gasoline, by volunteers in your community that cared about their neighbors (YOU) and their pets! We have many people who were former clients or disabled, ill or challenged in some way to help give our services in their area!
I often wonder how CJ and Empty Bowl have been able to accomplish so much with so few resources. I feel honored to be a part of such a worthy endeavor.

cj__2 05/10/2015
It is because of people like YOU Earl! someone who figures out how to do one more thing that fits in their lifestyle, that fits in with who they know, what they have, what they can do that just adds a bit into their life, yet makes such a difference. Empty Bowl Pets is so fortunate to attract quality leadership that allways us to do so much with so little!
I am happy that such an organization exists for people and their pets. Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry fulfills a great need in our communuity. CJ is always looking to expand so she can help them even more.

It is our "neighbor helping neighbor to build community" approach that is making such a difference. By aiding people to see that this is happening to my neighbor, my friend, a family member or even a coworker on the edge of going under, just a little effort by each makes a HUGE difference in a way that is so meaningful! As a founder, I believe in a persons right to do thing "their way". So I just figure out how to make it work, rather then fitting their (your) round peg in our square hole!
What a wonderful thing this organization does for our community, not only for the animals they help, but also the people. They help lift spirits and motivate people to get back on their feet in desperate times. From the homeless, to the people who lost their jobs and can't feed themselves, their family or their pets, to disaster victims, domestic violence victims and so much more, Empty Bowl will donate their time, food and most importantly, their love to those who need it most. I am so grateful to have met CJ and her team and plan to help them out for years to come. Thank you Empty Bowl for all that you do!
Empty Bowl serves a vital service in our community. Often times, people will provide for their pets before they care for their own needs. Recognizing this strong bonds between family members and pets, Empty Bowl helps to protect both animals and people. By providing food and other supplies to the pets of people in crisis, they play a critical role in getting those who are struggling back on their feet.
