Acmhs specializes in serving children and youth impacted by severe emotional disturbance, adults with serious mental illness and persons with alzheimer's and related dementia. In doing this, acmhs serves a wide age range. During the past year ages ranged from 2-99. Services are designed to help children and adults be safe, secure and successful in the community. Being safe, secure and successful in the community means different things depending on the age group. For young children, it means having a safe home with adequate food, clothes, heat, health care and not being subjected to neglect or abuse. This normally results in children being able to find a day care provider, be enrolled in kindergarten or enter the first grade. Youth have similar needs and demonstrate success by advancing in school and being engaged in meaningful activities like sports, hunting, fishing or hobbies. For adults, safe, affordable and accommodating housing is important as well as access to healthcare and having meaningful activity. For adults this may be furthering one's education, volunteering and having employment. For seniors and others impacted by alzheimer's or related dementia, it means assisting them to live in the community as long as possible through access to a day care. The day care allows family to continue to work if that be the case or simply to have a respite from providing care. For fiscal year ending 2017, over 300 children and youth experiencing diagnosed emotional deisturbances or mental health issues were served through family and children's services and the alaska child trauma center at acmhs. The majority had experienced complex trauma/adverse childhood events (ace). Over 70% reported improvement in life domains (school; community; family). Most improvements were in two or more life domains. Adult services served over 1,587 individuals. Over 200 were assisted with housing. Day break, the alzheimer's day care, provided almost 20,000 hours of adult day care services for the year. Fairbanks community health services was formed in september of 2014 to provide consumer driven behavioral healthcare services in the fairbanks service area. Fcmhs, acquired in 2014, served over 400 adults with severe mental illness and over 70 youth under 18 with behavioral health disorders.
