Programs: Advancing patient care through practice transformation awards programsashp student leadership awardthis program, funded through the walter jones memorial pharmacy student fund, is administered by the ashp pharmacy student forum in collaboration with the ashp foundation. Twelve students who demonstrate high academic achievement, exceptional interest in health-system pharmacy practice, and outstanding leadership skills were recognized. Each awardee submitted a plan to raise student awareness of the practice advancement initiative. Awardees will be surveyed to collect information on implementation and outcomes of their plan. Award for excellence in medication safety: a collaboration between the cardinal health foundation and ashp foundation, this program is designed to recognize pharmacist-led inter-professional teams that make significant institution-wide system improvements relating to safe medication use. The 2016 recipient and finalist organizations were selected from 16 applicants, using a letter of intent process undertaken by an independent inter-professional panel of experts in the field of medication safety and healthcare administration. Cincinnati children's hospital medical center was the recipient organization and received a $50,000 award for its study of decreasing vancomycin-associated acute kidney injury through multidisciplinary improvement of adherence to antimicrobial stewardship policy. The two finalists, geisinger clinic and new york-presbyterian hospital, each received $10,000 for their respective programs. The 2016 award for excellence video highlighted the success stories of the recipient and finalists and was shown to more than 10,400 attendees at the 2016 ashp midyear clinical meeting opening general session in las vegas, nevada. A dinner was also held to recognize the award winner and finalists' teams. For the ninth consecutive year, the ashp foundation, with support from ashp, sponsored a national radio media tour aimed at educating consumers about the vital role of health-system pharmacists. The radio media tour focused on 'giving children medicines: pharmacist tips to help avoid errors. ' clinical pharmacy specialist, dr. Breann taylor for cincinnati children's hospital medical center, the recipient of the 2016 award for excellence in medication safety, joined us as our pharmacy expert for 21 interviews that reached over 24 million listeners. She also recorded a public service announcement. In fy17, additional dissemination activities were added to the program. The two award finalists were asked to conduct live educational webinars with continuing education credits for pharmacists. The two webinars: (1) innovate your medication education: mrxed: utilizing technology for a patient-centered approach to medication education and (2) empowering pharmacists as active members of the care team for patients with chronic non-cancer pain, were well attended with a combined total of 888 participants on the live webinars. The webinars were also recorded and made available for on-demand access. Pharmacy residency excellence awards program: the 2016 pharmacy residency excellence awards program was supported again by amgen, inc. This unique national competition recognizes excellence and leadership in the training and mentoring of pharmacy residents. The pharmacy residency excellence awards program recognizes a preceptor, new preceptor and program. The objectives of this program are to: 1) recognize the achievements of residency programs and pharmacists who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in the training of pharmacy residents and 2) widely disseminate the results of these accomplishments to foster innovations in pharmacy resident training. Each awardee presented an educational webinar on a resident professional development topic that continuing education credits were added this year. A combined total of 1,110 people participated on the live webinars. The webinars were recorded and made available for on-demand access. This program, administered by the ashp foundation since 1971, is based on the concept that recognition through awards stimulates research and innovation and fosters improvement in the quality of the evidence. Oncology patient care traineeship: this program was converted to a tuition-based program in late 2013 when corporate support was discontinued. Two pharmacists were accepted into the traineeship and began their distance education in december 2016. The enrollees participated in experiential training at the university of texas m. D. Anderson cancer center and the university of washington medical center in the spring of 2017. Critical care traineeship: this traineeship entered its fourth year as a tuition-based program in fy17. Nine trainees completed the distance education component from december 2016 through march 2017 and participated in experiential training in the spring of 2017. Training sites for this program include: cleveland clinic, university of arizona medical center, mayo clinic hospital - rochester, texas tech university, university of cincinnati health - university hospital, etc.
advancing patient care through pharmacist leadership center for health-system pharmacy leadershipleadership programspharmacy forecast report 2017the 2017 pharmacy forecast report was supported by a grant from omnicell, inc. , to the ashp foundation's david a. Zilz leaders for the future fund and was published in ajhp in the january 15, 2017 issue. The distribution of the forecast report in ajhp ensured that it was made available to all 43,000 ashp members. It was published electronically in december and presented at an educational session during the 2016 ashp midyear clinical meeting, with an estimated attendance of 400 pharmacists at the session. The report generated authoritative, actionable strategic recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of leaders in hospital and health-system pharmacy. Pharmacy leadership institute (pli)the pharmacy leadership institute was not offered in fy16 due to lack of sponsorship. The foundation and boston university teams worked closely over fy16 to identify and secure sponsorship for an offering in fy17. Visiting leaders program (vlp)the visiting leaders program, with support from the david a. Zilz leaders for the future fund, had another successful year. Fourteen leaders were involved in 25 residency visits, reaching more than 650+ residents, in 18 states in fy17. Pharmacy leadership academy (pla)the pla, supported in part by an educational grant from amgen, is designed to provide comprehensive leadership education to pharmacists. Ninety-three percent of the participants successfully completed the program. The 2016-2017 class enrolled 94 pharmacists and was the largest class in the program's nine year history. The number of graduates in brings the number of pla participants up to 604 pharmacists in june 2017. Leadership speakers bureau (lsb)eight (8) pharmacy leaders spoke to pharmacy student society for health-system pharmacy (sshp) chapters at their campus in fy17. The leadership speakers bureau is in collaboration with the ashp student forum and is designed to offer sshps the opportunity to host a pharmacy leader to engage students on the topic of leadership as a professional obligation. Ashp state affiliate members and plajpli alumni are the primary source of speakers. Speakers highlight leadership opportunities and practice success stories in health-system pharmacy to underscore the need for this commitment as students. The student forum leadership section advisory group works closely with the center in the lsb's promotion and evaluation. Student leadership development workshopthe 3-hour leadership development workshop for pharmacy students is conducted annually at the ashp summer meetings. State affiliates have taken advantage of the program to engage students at their annual meetings. The workshop builds on the leaders speakers bureau theme giving students opportunities to explore management/leadership skill building through didactic presentations and practical case studies. William a. Zeilmer leadership lecture: where practice meets policythis annual luncheon-lecture event, hosted by ashp in partnership with the ashp foundation, is designed to honor the distinguished 40-year ashp career of william a. Zelimer and is supported by donors to the ashp foundation's william zellmer fund. Rear admiral (radm) pamela m. Schweitzer, pharm. D. , bcacp, chief professional officer (cpo), pharmacy and assistant surgeon general, united states public health service (usphs), presented the seventh annual william a. Zelimer lecture on september 20, 2016, as part of ashp's policy week activities. Ashp, which represents pharmacists who serve as patient care providers in acute and ambulatory settings, holds this event each year as part of its policy development and advocacy activities. Leadersedgethe ashp foundation continued the quarterly leadersedge webinar series. Topics included: "radical redesign of patient care processes: implications for medication use," "gateways to effective change: systems thinking in action for patient safety, and "brand your leadership with influence skills for advocacy. " in fy17, an opportunity to obtain continuing education credits was added to the program for the live and on-demand iterations. A cumulative total of 727 people participated in the live webinars. The webinars are also now available on-demand.
