Mission: The purpose of the association is to provide a forum for industry members to educate the citizenry and law enforcement agencies about knives and tools and to monitor legislation and litigation affecting the industry.
Programs: The american knife and tool institute (akti), a non-profit organization representing all segments of the knife industry and all knife users, is recognized world wide as a respected, credible and accurate source for legislative input, legislation status and industry information pertaining to knives and edged tools. Akti provides a focal point for resources and volunteer energy in the sensible evolution, development, and the consistent enforcement of knife legislation. Akti is the go to source for educational content about the history and future of knives and edged tools. Akti has been the reasonable and responsible voice of the knife-making and knife-using community since 1998. To accomplish this mission akti's goals are to: 1) educate - educate the public, legislators and law enforcement about knives, one of man's oldest tools as still relevant and valuable in daily lives; 2) promote - promote reasonable, responsible and consistent knife legislation to elected officials, law enforcement, regulatory agencies and individuals; and 3) inform - provide accurate industry, historical, and technical information, to help legislators, educators, the knife industry, and knife users make responsible decisions regarding knives. Specifically during 2016, the institute accomplished the following: 1) promote - developed and maintained relationships to make changes to legislation in 10 different states and on the federal level. Attended the congressional sportsmen's foundation (approximately 90 legislators and staff), the national assembly of sportsmen's caucus (approximately 150 state legislators and staff), and held meeting with legislators and key policy makers regarding the utility of knives and the importance of knives as tools as well as common issues in knife laws that need to be addressed. 2) educate - maintained information on the knife laws in all 50 states and on the federal level. Displayed at the blade show event in atlanta to distribute information about knife laws, safety, how to correctly measure a knife blade, and legal knife definitions. 3) inform - assisted over 20 individuals with legal issues and/or referred to attorneys or experts for additional assistance. Answered numerous questions for individuals and companies regarding specific questions about knife laws in their city or state. Communicated by email with members and supporters (over 24 times) on legislative or educational issues. Distributed 1,000 brochures for first time knife users. Distributed over 2,000 cards about the responsibilities of a knife user.
