I used to respect the AFI a lot. They have done a lot of great things for cinema. But I recently attended their film festival. They had NO SUBTITLES available for the hearing impaired. I have a partial processing speed issue and exercised my legal right to request subtitles, as is required by both state and federal law. The AFI not only didn't have it ready, but they also refused to do it. They literally refused to comply with the law!
Finally, in frustration I demanded my money back. They eventually agreed but have intentionally made the refund process as slow as possible. I have been emailing them for nearly 24 hours straight demanding my refund be expedited. I am sure they will claim it can't be done. As someone who has worked in payment systems for years, this is factually inaccurate. There are absolutely ways of expediting refunds to customers. They took the money out instantly, they can give it back instantly.
Instead of asking me how to do this or inform it can't be done, in house counsel has chosen retaliation and is intentionally refusing to respond to emails even though email responses are a disability accommodation. In house counsel is choosing to ignore me despite my valid assertion of rights.
To the AFI -- the expectation is that your staff, including counsel, act with professionalism. And intentionally refusing to respond to a hearing impaired person who relies on emails is both unprofessional and retaliatory. The expectation is that when a person asks for a timely refund, you provide it. Intentionally making the refund process take as long as possible to inflict harm on them is inappropriate and unethical.
It is my sincere hope you learn to act ethically and legally moving forward. Because based on my interactions with you, it appears you do neither.
