Programs: Membership: 2017 was another record year for aan membership recruitment and retention. Neurologists and neuroscience professionals from around the world now make up 34,000 aan members and contribute to the 91. 5-percent market share of us neurologists. Successful year-over-year recruitment and retention of members is attributed to the aan's commitment to continuing to grow the available resources for neurologists as well as the various members of a neurology care team no matter their practice setting, career stage, or geographic location. Neurologists prize their memberships with the aan and the many valuable benefits of being associated with the organization, including lifelong education opportunities through the aan institute's annual meeting, fall conference, breakthroughs in neurology conference, sports concussion conference, a highly regarded portfolio of scientific journals and publications such as neurology(r) and continuum(r), and many multimedia programs and tools designed to help them meet their regulatory requirements, overcome challenges in practice management, and stay at the top of their skills. Many of these tools and resources are benefits of membership. The aan increased the number of advanced practice providers and care team members to more than 1,000 in 2017, compared to just 228 in 2014. The aan values the integral role of these health care professionals and provides them with suitable education opportunities to deepen their knowledge of neurology and further enhance patient care. The aan received a record number of applications for fellow status in 2017, at 249. Fellow status acknowledges exemplary work and achievements in the neurosciences, the clinical practice of neurology or academic/administrative neurology, in the aan, and in the community. The aan's neurology career center is an important resource for members seeking jobs and prospective employers. Applications for jobs posted on the neurology career center were up by 250 percent over last year. The center offers several efficiencies for aan members interested in a new position, including one-click applications that allow one to express interest in a career center job posting by including comments in an email window sent to the advertiser; and direct access to the job alert tool, which allows one to easily save search criteria to receive emails from the career center when new positions of interest have been posted to the site. A new leadership program was also introduced in 2017. Live well, lead well: a well-being and resiliency program for neurologists is a unique nine-month program designed to reduce and prevent burnout among neurologists. Additionally, two analyses of academy surveys-burnout, career satisfaction, and well-being among us neurology residents and fellows in 2016 and burnout, career satisfaction, and well-being among us neurologists in 2016: a qualitative study-were published in neurology. In its continuing efforts to provide this group with valuable training the resources and support they need, the academy created a new consortium of residents and fellow and online synapse online community. publications: the publication of scientific, scholarly, and practice-related content is a vital part of the aan's activities, and essential to the careers of our members. The aan's publications also provide an opportunity to generate revenue that helps keep membership dues low. Founded in 1951, neurology(r) is the official scientific journal of the aan, and subscriptions are a benefit of membership. As the leading clinical neurology journal worldwide, neurology is directed to physicians concerned with diseases and conditions of the brain and nervous system. The journal's purpose is to advance the field of neurology by presenting new basic and clinical research with emphasis on knowledge that will influence the way neurology is practiced. The journal is at the forefront in disseminating cutting-edge, peer-reviewed information to the neurology community worldwide. Editions of the journal are printed in spanish and japanese for distribution in argentina and japan. A selection of articles compiling an english edition is published and distributed in india. Neurology podcasts surpassed 16 million downloads. The journal published translations of 10 guidelines into spanish in cooperation with the mexican academy of neurology. The resident & fellow section continued to grow with nearly 600 submissions received in 2017. Plans were made to move to short articles in print and full articles online in 2018, along with a redesign of the journal and all other aan publications. Neurology(r) genetics is a subspecialty journal of neurology. Published six times per year, this open access, online-only journal provides neurologists with peer-reviewed articles, editorials, and reviews to enhance patient care, education, and research in all areas of neurogenetics including genetic variations, genotype-phenotype correlations, pharmacogenomics, and gene-based clinical trials. Its papers are now searchable in pubmed. Neurology(r) neuroimmunology & neuroinflammation is a subspecialty journal of neurology. This open access, online-only journal is published six times per year and provides neurologists with peer-reviewed articles, editorials, and reviews to enhance patient care, education, and clinical and transitional research in neuroimmunology and neuroinflammation, which affect a broad range of neurologic diseases. Its papers are now searchable in pubmed. Neurology(r) clinical practice, a spin-off journal of neurology, publishes six times per year. The journal provides peer-reviewed, timely updates in clinical neurology and helpful analyses of office-based and health policy issues. The focus is on the day-to-day needs of practicing neurologists. It is provided free to subscribers of neurology. The full texts of all papers published in neurology clinical practice are now available in pubmed. The april 2017 issue presented spotlight on mental health and neurology. Continuum: lifelong learning in neurology(r) is the aan's bimonthly self-study continuing medical education journal. Each issue features in-depth clinical review articles focused around a single neurologic subspecialty topic for the practicing neurologist, residents and fellows, and medical students. The goals of continuum include disseminating up-to-date review articles in a lively, interactive format; fostering self-assessment and lifelong study skills; encouraging critical thinking; and strengthening and improving patient care. Each issue also includes clinical case studies, a topic-relevant ethics case, discussions of topic-relevant billing codes and other practice-related issues, a detailed patient management problem, and self-assessment post-reading multiple-choice questions. Continuum is a member benefit to resident and fellow (junior) members of the aan only; other aan members purchase a separate subscription to continuum. The aan began offering a combined subscription for continuum(r) with continuum(r) audio in october 2017. The two products will continue to provide high-quality education, as well as cme credits. Continuum circulation continues to grow yearly, particularly in the paid member category. Overall circulation (including junior members) increased to 12,673-an increase of 7. 5 percent over 2016. The publication's presence on social media grew to 3,913 followers. In 2017, continuum had 1,251 sponsored subscriptions in india. Neurology today(r), the aan's biweekly newspaper, covered important news on clinical, research, policy, practice, and other topics relevant to neurologists, and was received by all us neurologists and all aan members worldwide. The newspaper continued to increase its social media reach-as of december 2017, it reached over 6,877 facebook followers and 32,802 twitter followers. The aan continued deployment of neurology today(r) conference reporter in 2016, an e-news service sent to all subscribers covering scientific meeting highlights from the aan's annual meeting and seven additional subspecialty meetings. Neurology today won an award of excellence in health/writing from apex for the story, "lead crisis in flint exposes continuing risk to children nationwide: what neurologists should know and what they can do about it," by dan hurley. The patient education magazine neurology now(r)-to be rebranded as brain & life(r) in 2018-published a pilot spanish issue in april 2017. Beginning in april 2018, the first quarterly spanish-language issue will be published, with 100k copies printed. Approximately 90k will be mailed to aan members in zip codes of highest populations of spanish speakers for office distribution, with the remainder mailed to individual subscribers. The magazine is also represented at the aan's brain health fair in an area for spanish speakers. The aan also will distribute spanish translations one-page disease overviews from brain & life called "the basics. " also in 2017, the magazine also won a clarion award for an article about open notes, "going on record: patients have a right to their medical records but often don't know how to access them. "navigating life with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis by mark b. Bromberg, md, phd, faan, and diane banks bromberg, jd, was the latest entry in the neurology now(r) books patient and caregiver series. This book is unique as it covers two perspectives of these married authors: one is a neurologist with 30 years of experience treating als patients, and the other experienced firsthand the issues in providing care for a parent with als. The official monthly member magazine of the academy, aannews(r) is mailed to 27,000+ us members and is posted online at aan. Com for international and us members to easily access. Along with keeping members up-to-date on academy events and resources in 2017, the magazine explained the many new changes resulting from macra and the quality payment program, introduced the new aan board members and their leadership experiences and perspectives, and shared the success stories of neurology advocates.
tools/training: the aan also provides the tools, training, and assistance members need to be effective advocates for their patients and profession. The aan's 15th annual neurology on the hill set records with 216 aan members from 42 states meeting their members of congress. Advocates visited 272 congressional offices, sent out 2,072 tweets, and generated 1. 8 million social media impressions. The aan's palatucci advocacy leadership forum provides an intensive weekend of advocacy training to select members who seek to create change in their institutions, communities, or states. For two years, the aan has been advocating on behalf of its members with regard to macra and informing members about changes in how clinicians are reimbursed through the quality payment program (qpp). The changes issued by the centers for medicare & medicaid services for the 2018 qpp reflected a great deal of aan input. In 2017, the aan released three new quality measure sets to improve the care of patients with essential tremor, those receiving care in the inpatient and emergency settings, and for children with neurologic disease. The aan also updated its measurement sets for dementia management, parkinson's disease, and stroke and stroke rehabilitation and reaffirmed the multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy quality measurement sets. Through its advocacy, the aan hopes to improve recognition for cognitive care services to ensure that access to neurologists is protected and the workforce is sufficient to meet the increased needs of an aging population.
brainpac: advocating for the profession of neurology and preserving access to care by patients is a core activity of the academy. The academy's political action committee, brainpac, is an effective tool to advance this mission by enabling access to get our message to lawmakers. It also helps level the playing field with other physician specialties that have pacs and compete for attention. Voluntary contributions by us members and staff are key to a successful pac.
