Causes: Arts & Culture, Film & Video
Mission: To advance cinema and community in tandem through the exhibition of foreign, art, and independent films; and to serve cinema culture and the community discourse around it.
Programs: In 2015, the nightlight cinema brought over 13,000 ticket-holders through its doors for artistic, cinematic experiences that were previously inaccessible to akron-area residents. These exhibitions included more than 75 foreign, independent, and art films that would not otherwise have been shown on a big screen in the akron community. The typical movie going experience at the nightlight is atypical: every screening is introduced by a staff member or guest host, offering relevant background to enhance appreciation of the film. Concessions and bar items have a focus on items provided by local and high-quality vendors. Post-film discussions are held during our special series screenings. Our 12 film "people and places" series, sponsored by knight foundation and akron2akron, highlighted films that shed light on cities and cultures that are far away - or close to home. "the new sounds of silents" invited musicians to contribute pieces of original recorded score to a classic silent film. "academy noms" paired area chefs with classic academy award nominated films for brunch and a movie. "late@nightlight" brought cult films, an arthouse staple, to the nightlight by inviting select patrons and guests to curate and host their own short film series that fit the theme. "akron film+pride" sponsored by the community aids network/akron pride initiative, brought monthly films focused on lgbt stories to the nightlight screen. Meanwhile, the nightlight continued to serve akron through its community collaborations, including our ongoing screening series held at the akron art museum and the akron- summit county public library. Community film events were also hosted at the nightlight, with partners including the cleveland international film festival, the 2380 film club (a student filmmaking group at the university of akron), and keepers of the art, inc. Additionally, nightlight attendees were exposed to an impressive array of out-of-the-box experiences including art exhibits along the walls populated with locally-created art and curated vinyl sales, courtesy akron's square records.
