Mission: Affoa is a public-private partnership among government, academia and industry, established to build and sustain u. S. Global leadership in the revolutionary fibers and textiles industry by accelerating the widespread commercialization of highly functional advanced fibers and textiles for defense and commercial markets.
Programs: Affoa will enable a domestic manufacturing-based revolution by transforming traditional fibers, yarns, and fabrics into highly sophisticated, integrated and networked products and systems. Affoa was awarded a technology investment agreement valued at $317m from the us army armament research development and engineering center to execute the goals and objectives of the institute, primarily to develop and scale critical manufacturing processes for revolutionary fibers & textiles and stage manufacturing readiness level (mrl) 4 to 7. Affoa received grants totaling $7. 4m for the manufacturing usa program from the commonwealth of massachusetts. The amount includes cost share for related capital projects for the defense fabric discovery center and the headquarters fabric discovery center. Affoa established a nationwide network of 104 members who engage in the broader activities of the institute, including product development, knowledge generation and dissemination, education and workforce development. Affoa demonstrated two new technologies. Looks, the first fabric-to-digital platform that allows specifically designed advanced fabrics to be programmed with user defined customized content. Fabric lifi, the world's first fabric-based communication system utilizes fibers made of a new, technological material that can receive information from light, turn it into audio and transmit it to the wearer.
