I love when I get to interact with this organization! They are changing lives daily and have some of the most caring and kind people I know running the program
Does well: creates internal leaders from the community it engages with to look after and take care of all within engagement. It isn't a one man band but rather a platform of support that raises each participant to a level where they can provide connection, leadership, meaningful service and relationships with others in the community as is productive and in line with the goals of the organization and individual. Could improve: continuing to build systems around tracking data and making the tracking and interpretation of that information easier and smoother so as to make the variables of interest accessible in moments of decision making.
There is more avenues available to the non profit. Really good at inclusion, everyone is welcome. Better training for new coaches that are starting
Addict II Athlete is a great organization! It has been able to help so many people in recovery because it focuses on replacing activities that were a part of a lifestyle of addiction with activities that promote positive things like family, fitness, connection, and service.
November 19 2011 is a day that I will never forget. It's the day I was able to start working towards a better life. 11 years ago I was homeless living behind a dumpster in American fork with 2 mis matched shoes . I was scared to walk or ride a bike down the street cause the sound of a car made me fill like I was getting pulled over. I felt like i didnt have a sole who cares about me and my only concern each day was to try to find that drug to help me get filling good. I thought I was doing good in my life and that others were just being judgmental towards me and not giving me the opportunity to show them different. I was angry that my family and old friends wouldnt have anything to do with me. I didnt see the hurt that I caused them my actions took away the person that they chose to care about and love. After arriving at the jail that night I was sure that someone would bail me out for $250 but no one came. I begged I pleaded and still nothing. I spent 72 days at the county jail an released to foot hill 30 days later I graduated. A few weeks later I was in a cass waiting for a seat to open up for night treatment and I saw an old councilor talking about a new group called Addict to Athlete in my mind I chuckled and knew that it wasnt for me and that I could never run or do sports that night I was also accepted into day treatment. After a few weeks I was talked into going to a Addict II Athlete meeting and even run After a few weeks later the team chipped in and helped me get my first running shoes so my feet would stop hurting and I was welcomed with open arms and had a feeling of acceptance that I was not use to. I was able to graduate treatment fast and completed probation ahead of schedule so I could travel to death valley to pace at a 135mile race. My life was taking off in a new direction that I never thought possible. I started paying Bill's on time and paying off past debts I was able to get a drivers license and have it for more than 6 months. I have purchased a home a few different cars and have enjoyed the simple things in life. I was able to accomplish this because I was willing to open up, I was willing to talk and accept advice. I took a chance and got out of my comfort zone, I did something I thought I couldnt do(run) I found friends that wanted to invest in me and cared for me (shoes) I realised the sky is closer than you think so when you set a goal set it for the stars. You can always find a new one to go after if the first ones not what you want. And most of all reaching out when you are struggling or needing help people care. They distance there self because they are hurt not becase they hate you. Recovery is more than getting sober. It's not about getting your life back. Its building a new life one that you see fit. One you want, one you deserve. Dont back down dont give up one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward.
Today I am proud to say I am a husband, father, son, brother and a certified sober coach. Addict II Athlete has helped me change my life in more ways than just physically the team. Has been there to help me in all places of my life.
I have been involved with Addict II Athlete on and off for years now. It has been an amazing addition to what I do for my personal recovery. I absolutely love the fact that I can bring my own family to events and meetings if I wish to. The last two years have been a real struggle with my mental health. Bringing AIIA back into my life has been a big help. I look forward to many more amazing experiences with the team. The only thing I would say would be great if they did more mens meetings. I believe they are starting next month. If you are struggling and looking for something different. Addict II Athlete is worth looking into.
