Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Human Service Organizations, Human Services

Mission: Abcd's mission is to empower disadvantaged people by providing them with the tools to overcome poverty, live with dignity and achieve their full potential.

Programs: Abcd's child care choices of boston (cccb) serves as the child care resource and referral agency for boston, brookline, cambridge, chelsea, revere, somerville and winthrop. Cccb plays a key role in making child care work for everyone by providing support, resources, technical assistance, training and child care expertise to a very diverse community of more than 8,500 families and 1400 child care providers. Cccb distributed more than $50 million this year in child care vouchers to more than 13,000 children. (continued on schedule o)

abcd's energy programs keep vulnerable households safe in the life-threatening cold of new england winters through its fuel assistance program and make a dramatic contribution to reducing energy costs for low-income families in communities state-wide through its weatherization and conservation programs. Studies show that conservation improvements typically save 25-35 percent of winter heating bills. The abcd energy program made payments to local vendors to keep nearly 26,000 households warm this year and nearly $45 million was invested in multiple energy conservation programs. abcd's head start and early head start programs help more than 3000 young children prepare for success in school and life by providing high quality early education. Head start serves 3-5 year olds at 33 sites in boston, malden and everett. Early head start supports infants and toddlers at 12 sites and pregnant mothers at 3 sites. Head start serves as a model for early education initiatives nationally, providing comprehensive services - education, health, nutrition, family services and intensive parent engagement, and advocates for the needs of young children from low-income families.
