in 2010, the academy's research program continued with internal retreats, plus funding for friends of creation spirituality (fcs) and the sophia project. At fcs, matthew fox, who also is the academy's visiting scholar, continued his yellawe project to reinvent education for at-risk youth in oakland, ca, as well as expanding into other urban communities. The sophia project continued to develop and implement its parent education project for homeless families and their children. The funded work at both fcs and the sophia project informs the academy's development of its educational programs. Internally, the academy's research work served 13 employees in four staff retreats, 22 staff and teachers in an el otro lado retreat, and 13 faculty members in a faculty orientation retreat.
the academy had three other main program service areas in 2010: trainings, seton legacy project, and emerging initiatives. Through trainings, the academy continued to implement its "learning field" model through "leading by being" (lbb). Lbb is the academy's core, two-year curriculum for community leaders, teachers, artists, and other individuals. The third installation of lbb, which began in 2008, finished in september 2010 with 13 participants who attended three modules during the year. The academy's first installation of leading by being-generation next, for young adults, finished with 3 participants in two weekends in january and april. The academy introduced 22 individuals to its lbb program through two "leading by being introductory evenings. " finally, the academy continued to restructure its lbb curriculum to launch lbb4 in june 2011. In 2010, the academy's seton legacy project had two major accomplishments. In may was the opening of a year-long exhibition of the art of ernest thompson seton at the new mexico history museum. Over 125,000 people visited the museum during the exhibition's run. To accompany the exhibition, gibbs smith published "ernest thompson seton: 'the life and legacy of an artist and conservationist,'" by david l. Witt. Mr. Witt is the curator and historian of the academy's seton legacy project. In 2011, his book won the historical society of new mexico's ralph twitchell award, given annually for the best history book about new mexico. Also, the academy hosted a seton birthday event for 90 participants and held a seton tour at the academy's new center for 55 participants. The academy continues to budget funds for emerging initiatives, unforeseen program opportunities that arise during the year. In 2010, however, all of the academy's program work (and hence program expenses and revenue) fell under the above five program areas.
