Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Education

Mission: We specialize in creating resources to help parents build language with children who are at risk for language delays. American Academy of Pediatrics reports that 1:5 children will have a language delay, making it the most common developmental delay for children. 2020 we started developing our first resource; simple to sign baby board books that rhyme when signed. Sign language is an effective communication tool for children with conditions like hearing loss, Down Syndrome , Autism and those with no “conditions” at all.

The "Rhymes When Signed" books are fantastic! I work with deaf and hard of hearing preschoolers, and they enjoy the pictures all on their own, then when we sign the words together, they learn valuable lessons about how the signs rhyme based on handshape, movement, or location. These books are such a brilliant idea, and I can't wait until there are more of them available!

I have been volunteering at About Love and Language for a few months and it has been incredible! I have loved coming up with creative ways to advertise the books and direct people to the resources we provide. The services About Love and Language offers are incredible and have the potential to help so many children with language delays. It is important to have language-rich environments and the resources at About Love and Language support families in developing those environments for their children.

About Love and Language has great resources for any caregiver who wants to communicating with their child. They have three great books that help anyone get started communicating with their child and have more on the way! I would suggest this for anyone who wants to get started communicating with their child.

We ordered the children's board books that rhyme in ASL. Our daughter is deaf and she loves these books. We are very thankful to have such a great resource to help our daughter learn language. Hope to see more materials come out of this nonprofit organization. Thanks for what you have produced so far!

My 15-month-old daughter is deaf and the About Love and Language books are her FAVORITE! We read them almost daily. I can tell that she notices the visual rhymes and they are really fun for her. She even signs some of the words herself now! I also gave copies of these books to our local deaf resource center where we have a weekly playgroup and the other families there love them as well! These books are truly unique as I have not found resources like these from any other organization. I would love to see more :)

This is a wonderful resource for building visual language (ASL in particular). Deaf babies benefit so much from having these sweet books that give them the "play with language" ability that hearing children gain from nursery rhymes. English sound-based rhymes don't do anything for deaf babies but these handshape "rhymes" give the same effect in sign language. My family is so thankful for these books that we acquired and look forward to others being produced. I think the work of About Love and Language is of great benefit to families of deaf or hard of hearing children (and others), and I hope it will be more widely available.

About Love and Language's books are an excellent resource for families with DHH children. We had Laura speak and read books recently at our parent support group for DHH babies, toddlers and children and their families. She was a wealth of information and really encouraged parents to read with their babies, explained how to read with them best, and explained the concept of rhyming in ASL. She brings something truly unique to the table and I love how she involved the Deaf community in concepts, writing, and illustrating of her series!
