Mission: The plaza theatre, inc. Was started to revitalize interest in, and use the facilities of a building in downtown wharton, texas which was originally built circa 1904. The building has historically been used for community activities and entertainment, and the plaza theatre continues the tradition of providing live entertainment for wharton county and the surrounding area. Emphasis has also been placed on the restoration of the building to its original appearance, thus preserving some of the history of wharton county. The organization, along with bringing back live cultural entertainment inside the building, has taken the opportunity at each performance to educate the public about the historical significance of the plaza theatre building and surrounding buildings on the courthouse square in downtown wharton, texas.
Programs: Several live plays, musicals, classic films, and musical performances are held each year at the plaza theatre. Net revenues generated by the productions are used for the continuing project of restoring the historic plaza theatre building in which the productions are presented. A portion of the net revenues is also used to fund future productions.
