Mission: Inspired by the natural setting and artistic life of long island's east end, the parrish art museum illuminates the creative process and how art and artists transform our experiences and understanding of the world and how we live in it. The museum fosters connections among individuals, art, and artists through care and interpretation of the collection, the presentation of exhibitions, publications, educational initiatives, programs, and artists-in-residence. The museum was founded in 1897 by samuel longstreth parrish and was chartered by the university of the state of new york education department in 1954. The museum opened its new building designed by herzog and de meuron to international acclaim in november 2012 allowing it to exhibit its permanent art collection side-by-side with changing exhibitions throughout 12,000 square feet of gallery space. In 2014 the museum organized two major exhibitions which toured nationally: jennifer bartlett: history of the universe and william glackens (co-organized with the barnes foundation and the fort lauderdale museum of art). In addition, the museum presented work by artists maya lin, alan shields, and steven and william ladd along with two offsite exhibitions in the local community as a part of its summer road show series. Artists steven and william ladd worked with more than 1,000 local children as part of an artist-in-residence program held in conjunction with their exhibition. The museum's permanent collection was re-installed for the third time since opening in its new building in 2012. In 2014, the museum served an audience of more than 63,530 children and adults through its exhibitions, public programs, and partnerships with local schools.
