Mission: Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West, Habitat STW, builds houses in partnership with families who qualify for home ownership based on three criteria: need, willingness to partner with Habitat and an ability to repay a no-interest mortgage.
Results: Founded in 1981, Habitat STW has built over 264 affordable new homes, completed over 17 major home renovations, and impacted the lives of over 1,000 families across western St. Tammany parish.
Geographic areas served: western St. Tammany Parish
Programs: Home construction: the organization built nine new homes, seven of which were sold during the fiscal year ending 6/30/2017, at no profit, to partner families falling in the 30-60% of area median income range. The remaining two homes were leased during the fiscal year, with a subsequent purchase to occur in the next fiscal year.
restore: the habitat restore sold $895,653 of recycled and gently used building materials, home furnishings and household goods, thereby avoiding substantial additions to area landfills. The net profits from restore were solely dedicated to the building of the nine homes described above.
homeowner services: the organization operates the st. Tammany homeownership center, which provides services to both low and moderate income housebuyers. The homeownership center helps people explore, prepare for, and sustain successful homeownership. This includes pre-purchase counseling, homebuyer training, financial fitness and home maintenance classes, and post-purchase counseling. In addition to the seven partner families that purchased habitat homes this fiscal year, the homeownership center also helped five families achieve homeownership using other affordable mortgage products.
volunteer services: the organization is dependent upon volunteers, from the local area as well as nationwide, to help fulfill its mission. The affiliate hosted 1,667 volunteers at its construction sites and restore during the fiscal year. Those volunteers, under trained supervision, donated over 29,000 hours (14 full time equivalents) to the organization.
