If ever there was a space that you could dream up to learn, some may dream of the outside or of their stone classrooms in a school but I would dream of wood floors, I would dream of hallways and galleries and art and quiet interactions. I would dream of the Missing Peace Art Space. The outside is very unassuming, in fact you might realize when you walk up to the door what is about befall you when you enter. But quiet befalls you. Heavy wooden flanks lay down as the floor, like a tree saying "Come sit with me and I will show you everything." My first impression of the floors, walls, space was nonjudgment and learning. There is compassion present but not in the traditional sense. It is a seeking compassion, it is a show you someone else even as you grow uncomfortable compassion. It is a restoration of compassion. You know what I mean. The compassion we had as kids that when someone gets hurts you run to them or when someone is picked on you stand against the bully. Missing Peace Art Space is in the business of growing that kind of compassion again. Be it against war, against genocide, against prejudice, against silence. Even with all of that I like the space because of the floor and the labyrinth hallways that allow me to take in what I am ready to see while not judging my commitment to see more. Gabriela has curated a space to brag about in this way. A true pride piece for Dayton and for the peace movement at large. Her talent is in creating a turnkey operation for people wanting to learn and jump in the singing about peace. The space was life changing for me as it married the difficulty of the language and visual aspects of peace and war with a meditative space. I am thrilled beyond measure to live in a city with such a nice little treasure. Bravo Unitarian Fellowship for World Peace. Bravo Gabriela Pickett.
Missing Peace Art Space in Dayton, Ohio has become the hub for compassion, peace and multi-cultural community understanding. Led by the inspirational Gabriela Pickett, the Missing Peace Art Space has provided a foundation for enhanced awareness of global inequities, pain and suffering - but handled through the medium of art. This allows difficult subjects to be presented on a personal level, somewhat gently, allowing the viewer to absorb and personalize difficult issues at their own pace.
My favorite activity led by Missing Peace is the annual Dia de los Muertos event! Pulling together many local volunteers from the arts, music, and educational community, Missing Peace created an incredible event - bringing this beautiful tradition to the people of a small city in the midwestern United States! Doing this with our local Mexican immigrant community, allowing some of our newest residents to share their culture with us, has had a tremendous impact in bridging what may have seemed to be a tremendous cultural divide.
Missing Peace Art Space has become a vital resource in our community -- making a tremendous difference through passion for compassion.
For over for years the Unitarian Fellowship for World Peace has been serving the greater Dayton area with projects pertaining to peace education, community building, art appreciation and peace building... The projects have included some fascinating art exhibitions, community peace events, immigration awareness projects & programs, international peace education projects and more. If this can be done with just volunteers and a shoe string budget, think what could be achieved if we invested in peace like we invest in defense(war).
There are so many stories, in mainstream media, about our efforts fighting wars. It's great to have an organization that helps tell the whole story of what war is and does to us. Thank goodness we have people and organizations who support and foster peace. I have seen what war has done to my Uncle and know that nothing good comes from it in the end.
This group is firmly committed to providing many platforms for working for peace. Their artistic endeavors, such as Artenade, provide venues for art with a message. Their other programs are also valuable in their dedication to making a better world.
I attended the Arrigo Musti exhibit. It was outstanding; dark, mysterious, fearless, marvelous. The exhibition rooms are perfect -- can only imagine the grandeur of a larger space.
When you walk into the opening room of the Missing Peace Art Space on Dutoit St. in Dayton , Ohio , there to greet you in this renovated old carriage house, is a wall of displays on international Peace. To the left is a large painting by the Italian painter Musti which has a figure blinded and the viewer can interpret that to mean whatever they want, but in the context of the peace display, I felt it called to us as humans to open our hearts and mind to world peace. As you tour the artist on display, for Feb. it is Mary Perry Stone, you can view the powerful work , which was hung with care and glowed! A beautiful show !
The Missing Peace Art Space is an art museum that has a timely and important special purpose. The exhibits are by artists whose art tells us about the horror of war and the option of choosing the positive power of peaceful relationships among our human family. Another unique feature of the museum is a room specifically for works by women artists.
Very well organized. Plenty of information about the artist. Really enjoyed meeting the owner and spending time with her. Very sweet and welcoming.
Through the Missing Peace Art Space, a non profit project of the UFWP, an artistic forum for exploring issues of peace and violence is created in a tolerant, non-commercial environment, www.missingpeaceart.org. Since opening in September of 2009 the space has had a remarkable lineup of talented artists from around the world exploring the concept of peace through art. The intimate, easily accessible setting and no cost for exhibitions makes the exhibitions available for a large audience who would not normally attend such exhibitions. The Missing Peace Art Space is a member of the International Network of Museums for Peace, www.museumsforpeace.org, which allows it to have a greater global influence.
