Review for Unitarian Fellowship for World Peace, Dayton, OH, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Through the Missing Peace Art Space, a non profit project of the UFWP, an artistic forum for exploring issues of peace and violence is created in a tolerant, non-commercial environment, www.missingpeaceart.org. Since opening in September of 2009 the space has had a remarkable lineup of talented artists from around the world exploring the concept of peace through art. The intimate, easily accessible setting and no cost for exhibitions makes the exhibitions available for a large audience who would not normally attend such exhibitions. The Missing Peace Art Space is a member of the International Network of Museums for Peace, www.museumsforpeace.org, which allows it to have a greater global influence.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing how the art of peace can over come the barriers of language and culture and communicate the common human desire for a world that is more peaceful and compassionate.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make it 10 times it size and have it open every day with a full time staff and more projects for young people.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing how such a humble place for peace can become the birthplace for the ideas of peace in the hearts and minds of those who visit and share in the experience of the artwork displayed.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

I am a volunteer, but others who volunteer here are very dedicated to the organization and to the fostering of a culture of peace.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

be the Smithsonian of Peace Museums. A place that would allow visitors to explore for themselves what the complex idea of peace means to them. People would travel from around the world to see this remarkable space for peace.

Ways to make it better...

there were more resources available to take this concept to where it needs to go. The Missing Peace Art Space has been put together with the time of volunteers and private donations, much of it from the same few people.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

funding, funding and funding. Everyone who comes to the place love it. They remark about how it would be great if we could expand, advertise, do more programs, but all of this take funds. Sadly the funds for peace projects are very scarce.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Our media, toys and games, TV, movies, our culture in general is fixated on violence, but if we are to have peace we need to make space for it. Showing people, especially our young how to explore the issues of peace is imperative.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?
