Programs: Tostan is an international nonprofit working with rural and remote communities in eight African countries. Tostan’s three year nonformal education program, the Community Empowerment Program (CEP), provides participants with knowledge and skills in human rights, health and hygiene, literacy, math, problem-solving and project management—empowering them to become self-sufficient leaders in their communities’ development. The program has impacts across the five key areas of Governance, Education, Health, Environment and Economic Growth, while other key results of the holistic program include the abandonment of female genital cutting and child/forced marriage, dramatic improvements in maternal and infant health, increased school registration, especially for girls, and the empowerment of women and girls. The word Tostan means “breakthrough” in Wolof language.

I endorse the work of Tostan from two viewpoints -- as a former volunteer, and as a current donor.
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
seeing up-front the high level of commitment of their staff and the good they do in the communities they serve. I meet people in my current job whom I did not know previously; many of them are familiar with Tostan and their comments are very positive.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
No changes. Stay focused on the mission and don't grow too much. Part of the success of Tostan, I feel, is due to the fact that it is committed to continued community service, not necessarily growth.
