STEP IT UP INC Overview
Target demographics: Youth ages 14 to 24 in the Portland area
Programs: Since 2003, SIU has been developing, evaluating, and implementing two innovative pilot programs, the Pre-Internship Program and the Internship Program, for high school students to make a strong connection between school, careers options, and work. The Pre-Internship Program is for high school freshman and sophomores to conduct online research for career options based on their individual interests and school transcript achievements. This program developed from the need for younger students to become involved with our organization before they are old enough for an internship. Students in this program are involved in career, college and scholarship learning activities, field trips to businesses and college campuses, speakers and discussion groups about relevant career issues, and financial management training workshops. These students will receive educational support throughout the school year through SIU. The Internship Program is for high school juniors to experience their chosen career fields firsthand and make connections for future employment. This innovative program has been very successful with the students and our business and institution partners. The minimum age for participation is sixteen, and the students must have at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA). The Internship Program gives students an opportunity to gain professionalism, accountability, and general job readiness. Students are required to submit an application along with their school transcript and participate in an interview process to be eligible for selection by the SIU Board of Directors. Students who go through this process gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. These students are eligible for career and education support until age 25. We have also developed a Career Achievement Program to assist first generation high school graduates in achieving their college and career goals.
