ODWIN's philosophy, in the words of its founder, Mary F. Malone, RN: "There is no more powerful antidote to racism and sexism than well-educated, professionally prepared people." In 1964, ODWIN was begun to assist those traditionally underrepresented: women, people of color, ethnic minorities, poor people with inadequate prior education, to develop a firm educational foundation and attain not just acceptance into college but successful completion, not just a better job but a profession. Since then, ODWIN has helped over 3,100 people to achieve that goal, principally in the health care and education professions. Annually, approximately 90% of ODWIN's graduates succeed in college programs, graduate and enter the professions they had set as their goals.
