Programs: The Marine Biological Laboratory maintains collaborative research centers for the scientific study and investigation of a wide range of biological studies from biomedical to ecological research. Major research centers and initiatives include: ? Ecosystems Center, which investigates the structure and function of ecological systems, predicts their response to changing environmental conditions, applies the resulting knowledge to the preservation and and management of natural resources, and educates both future scientists and concerned citizens.? Bay Paul Center, which explores the evolution and interaction of genomes of diverse organisms that play significant roles in environmental biology and human health. ? Encyclopedia of Life Project: the MBL is a cornerstone institution in this historic effort to create a web page for all 1.8 million named species of life on Earth. The EOL will serve as a global biodiversity tools that will transform the science of biology, allow all people to join in the study of life on Earth, and give policymakers the information they need to preserve and protect our planet.? Whitman Center for Visiting Research: a uniquely productive place for collaborative biological research for scientists from around the globe. Discoveries made here have dramatically altered our understanding of biology and offered bright new possibilities for human health. ? Discovery Training Program: The MBL's intensive laboratory-based education program is not matched by any other institution anywhere in the world. Our discovery courses have been repeatedly cited as having a transformational effect upon the careers of young investigators.The oldest private marine laboratory in the Western Hemisphere, the MBL has a resident research staff of 120 scientists and students, which expands in the summer with the addition of more than 1,000 scientists and advanced students from 200 institutions. Fifty-six Nobel Laureates have taught, taken courses, or conducted research here.
