For the past five years, I have had the distinct privilege of serving on a committee for Art on the Square. The helpfulness, vision, and motivation of this group of volunteers is unmatched! By working year-round, a dream becomes a reality year after year and is FREE and open to the public. People of all ages have the opportunity to view and purchase fine art and support our community.

Without a doubt Art on the Square is the premiere event in Belleville, IL. Not only does the fine arts fair provide free of charge access to major artists and their work it also focuses on the education of the fairgoers...including children of all ages. By creating the Artists in Residence program, school children ranging from elementary school thru high school are given the opportunity to experience in the classroom the craft of individual artists who generously give of their time. This is only one of the very positive results created by Art on the Square.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My own exposure to artists and their work that I never would have had the opportunity to see if not for Art on the Square.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Art on the Square is 100% volunteer...no paid workers. The Director and co-founder of AOS Patty Gregory work tirelessly year round to make it the success that it is. She should be paid.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

My sense of being a contributor although small to a very successful community event. Also experiencing the energy and committment by all of the volunteers to create this wonderful event.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Volunteers from all walks of life who show an amazing about of talent and enthusiasm for Art on the Square. Most of them hav been with the show since its firt event in 2002,

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

provide more opportunities for education and appreciation of the fine arts by expanding art education in the schools and creating a museum to house major works of art that would be available to the general public. (We'd be happy with five million bucks!!

Ways to make it better...

In my experience Art on the Square only gets better...not by changing something wrong but by adding to the already successful production of the fair with innovative ideas to further the appreciation and availability of the fine arts.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Financial. During this downtime of our economy, raising the funds to produce Art on the Fair has been difficult. I'm ure all non-profits are experiencing this same challenge.

One thing I'd also say is that...

For me, the fine arts event is the best thing that has ever happened to our community. A life-long resident of the city, I take great pride in telling people I am from Belleville, IL, the home of Art on the Square.

Art on the Square has brought together a community in support of the arts in a collaborative effort that is seldom seen. This event brings together artists from around the world while at the same time highlighting the artistic talents of high school students and other young performers. This family friendly event not only brings much needed revenue to the businesses in our area, it has become a source of great pride for our city. Volunteers manage every aspect of the project, from the co-directors down to the trash clean-up. Those who want to attend a safe, relaxing event that celebrates the arts need to come to Belleville, Illinois on May 15-16 and see how small-town, civic minded individuals can put together the #1 Rated Art Event in the country.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my community. I have seen a new appreciation for the arts that reaches way beyond one event. Other artistic programs like Wine Dine n Jazz and the placement of sculpture pieces throughout our city have grown out of the excitement over Art on the Square

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing what a group of , committed volunteers can accomplish when they work together and how they can continue to attract new volunteers because of their enthusiasm and passion for this event.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

from all walks of life, and repreesnting many age groups from grade school to retirees. They are so passionate about what they do that their enthusiasm has lit a fire within the whole community. Art on the Square is a source of great pride for everyone.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

continue to sponsor a first-class event with the same committment and enthusiasm without having the ongoing worries that come from needing to raise the funds to put-on such a beautiful, well-organized event.

The Art On The Square experience. It's the middle of May. We're out of the duldrums of Winter. The weather is usually amazing. The Belleville Square is blooming with freshly planted flowers. The beautiful fountain is refreshing the beautiful surroundings. People are enjoying the atmosphere. And we haven't even talked about the 100 artists that are showing their dazzling creations. Stroll the Square, enjoy the art, stop to talk with friends, pause for a meal or refreshment at a table. Feel the spring breeze. Absorb the warmth of the season and the warmth of all the people. You have to be there.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

volunteering for the last 5 years setting up the High School art show that is presented with Art On The Square and draws in over 200 entries from over 35 schools in the Southern Illinois area. The quality of the High School art show alone is amazing.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the volunteers and how friendly and dedicated the are to the show and the artists. The artists are great too.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

not do any better.

I have been involved with this foundation for years and have been overwhelmed by the difference it has made to the community of Belleville, Illinois. Belleville has regained a sense of pride in its history and a determination to reclaim its position of prominence in the region.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

developing publicity.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

try to involve more young people, ages 25-40.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing the response of the community.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

a very positive.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

create a Santa Fe, NM in the midwest.

Ways to make it better...

I had know more about Internet advertising.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

trying to maintain the momentum.

One thing I'd also say is that...

It is amazing what a determined group of all volunteers can do!

This is the most amazing group of volunteers! They have taken a brand new show and put it in the top 5 of the country in less than 4 years time. Art on the Square has been the #1 Art show in America in 2008, #2 in 2009 and is currently #1 for 2010. They also have a wonderful education component with their artists in residency programming, their art workshops for children of deployed military, and the Sculpture in the City program, which has donated 16 piecees of Sculpture to the city of Belleville in the past 3 years.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

many positive ways. The biggest has been the change in the Belleville community and the sense of pride it has given the city and its residents.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Working with all the other wonderful, talented people. The whole volunteer staff is truly dedicated and produce a true labor of love for the community that they live in.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

unbelievable workers. Over 40 committee volunteers who work all year round and over 450 volunteers that help throughout the main 3 day art fair.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Put in a fabulous sculpture park for children that would have art camps and activities every weekend and day camps in the summer. Many local artists could be employed by this! Art as an Economic Stimulus!!

I have been going to Art on the Square since its inception. I have found the venue of being on the Public Sqaure an ideal place to hold the event. Also, I have been so happy with everything that I have purchased from the artists. How fortunate we are to have such a wonderful event in our community.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

being able to buy quality art pieces for my home. These are pieces that I will be able to hand down to my daughter and grandchildren.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

give them more money to have more choices.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the common goal of wanting to do the job right.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Very, very dedicated to the cause. Wanting to make sure that the public and the artists gain the most from their Art on the Square experience.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Purchase its own land to hold Art on the Square. Build some buildings so that we would not have to worry about the weather.

Ways to make it better...

I can't think of anything that would have made it better.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

One thing I'd also say is that...

Art on the Square is the number one art show in the US as stated by "Art Fair Source Book". In its ninth year, this juried show is the talk of the art world. Please visit Belleville May 14, 15, 16, 2010 to see the 100 juried artists exhibit their work around Veteran's Memorial Fountain. In 2009 pre-purchase patrons bought over $70,000 in Art Cash to spend with the artists.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have added many types of pieces to my art collection. Getting to know the artists personally has been very rewarding and adds another dimension to the collection.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I have been on the committee since its inception. Patty Gregory the executive director calls us the "Committee from Heaven".

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The committee members are such dedicated volunteers. We have become a large extended family.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Be the best art show in downtown Belleville with outreach to many more people interested in the arts. It could also buy sculpture not just for city installations, but through the county.
