Review for WeSPARK Cancer Support Center, Sherman Oaks, CA, USA
I feel so fortunate that WeSpark was there for me when I needed it. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer I was so terrified. My family and friends were very supportive and I really appreciated that but they had never been thru this and so couldn't really comfort me. But when I saw a councilor at WeSpark, she said the most perfect thing: This is a club nobody wants to belong to and I'm sure you want to run out of here but the people here have been through it and we can help. This is what made me want stay and they truly did make me feel like I wasn't alone. I didn't have any money and that didn't matter to them either -- they were there whenever I needed them with classes, wigs for chemo, hats, information etc. Also -- and this is really a big deal to me -- when I was there I also felt I could ask questions that I couldn't voice to my family/friends without scaring them or myself too much. For example: Everybody kept telling me think positive! They of course meant well but with this came more crushing terror and pressure: What if I didn't think positive? Would I make it even worse for myself? How could you not think in an angry and negative way about what is happening to you when you have cancer. This really was a big deal to me. WeSpark let me know that it was okay to be angry and negative if I felt like it -- I wasn't going to magically doom myself by having bad feelings, which sounds weird but you can't imagine the relief. It actually had the opposite affect. They then helped me with activities (yoga, group therapy sessions etc) that put me in a better space to deal with this. I will be forever grateful to them. They truly deserve the Cancer Fighters Award. I know this because I write these words it all comes back and I am getting misty eyed. I am So glad they were there!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
helping me fight my battle with cancer
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
not change a thing
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
they were close by and I got to tell others who were scared from having cancer about them.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
people who really knew their stuff and who helped me a lot.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
expand. There should be one in every state.
Ways to make it better...
they couldn't improve -- they were great
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
the bad economy.
One thing I'd also say is that...
I'm glad I went. Almost didn't want to deal with my illness.
