Review for Diversity Is Victory Among Sisters with Soldiers of Life, Inc (DIVAS with SOL), Oakland, CA, USA
DIVA’s with SOL founder, Tara Johnson saw a need in the community among teens who yearned for an organization where they could turn to receive motivational direction and support. Instead of turning a blind eye, Ms. Johnson pulled up her sleeves and didn’t hesitate to put in the necessary work in the community and get dirty.
Creating a place that fosters hardwork , trust, and commitment, Ms. Johnson has given all those involved the tools through her organization DIVA’s with SOL, a chance to get there. D.I.V.A’s with SOL has been a wonderful place for teens to both receive and give support and resources not only to its members, but to the communities it reaches. The idea that working hard and playing hard provides more opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed can be seen in the lives of its members and the communities that they help.
With support, structure and individual attention, students are able to excel and go beyond their initial goals. DIVA’s with SOL encourages and prepares teens for higher education. In addition to the belief that higher education is the key to open up doors once locked, they also support individualized paths for those who choose alternative routes to education with the goal personal empowerment and belief leads to success. The success experienced is more than academic, it helps those involved build self-esteem, work towards a promising future and further their personal goals.
Some examples of this organizations love and dedication can be seen through the yearly “Reindeer Workshop” which provides a place for youth during Christmas break when most doors are closed, to continue activities targeted towards empowerment while embracing the Christmas spirit. This program also parallels with “Snacks with Santa” for children in the community. In addition to the annual “Giving Thanks for Thanksgiving Baskets” which this organization works tirelessly collecting months before hand in order to provide for families who would otherwise go without, Ms. Johnson has kept her eyes on the prize of helping those who want to succeed, and her doors open in order to reach as many youths as possible to give them every opportunity to succeed and become EMPOWERED!!
