Review for Mujeres de Maiz Opportunity Foundation, Sequim, WA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Mujeres de Maiz Opportunity Foundation is an amazing grassroots organization. When I donate money and time, I know it is going directly to educate young indigenous women on many levels. They are given opportunities they wouldn't normally have, and with their education they are also able to give back to their communities, encouraging others to further their education.
Also, when board members take trips to Chiapas (at their own expense), they transport much needed donated items (i.e. toothbrushes, eyeglass frames) to the communities they visit and are able to see the effects of the foundation's efforts firsthand.

I have been proud to be a board member of Mujeres de Maiz Opportunity Foundation since its inception. All of us on the board have traveled to Chiapas, Mexico at least once, where we have had the opportunity to connect with the women who are being empowered to further their education and share what they know with the other members of their communities. 91% of the money we have accumulated with our fundraising efforts goes directly to the women. Each time we visit Chiapas we are able to see the number of scholarship recipients growing and an increase in programs and educational opportunities that the women are initiating in their communities and with each other as a sewing cooperative.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

....seeing firsthand the increased opportunities for and empowerment of the indigenous women of Chiapas, Mexico.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

...I can't think of any other changes that we aren't already generating as we make our way on this venture.

Role:  Board Member & I help with fundraising efforts and have traveled to Chiapas twice. I presented an art workshop to two groups while there the last time. .
