My Nonprofit Reviews

Review for Desert Hockey Development, Cave Creek, AZ, USA
I became involved with Desert Hockey Development when it was in its infancy. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made!
The involvement with the parents and children that have been to our clinics has seriously made a huge impact in my life. The smile on a kids face the first time they score a goal, or help a teammate score is priceless. But so is seeing a child make friends and share in the joy of being part of something. We call that lighting the lamp, it's a hockey term that means scoring...but when the lamp is a child's face, it is SO much more than a simple goal in a game.
With DHD we teach children how to play ball hockey, but there is so much more to what we do. We help them learn valuable skills, patience, teamwork, listening and persistence.
We are grateful to work with amazing volunteers and parents, and blessed to have such a great group of amazing children.
All children can be great...they just need the opportunity. They just need their lamps to light up.
Review for Barry Goldwater Institute for Public Policy Research, Phoenix, AZ, USA
This is NOT a charity.
The Goldwater Institute is a group of lawyers who ask people for money “in the Defense of Liberty”, and they mean it, as long as your opinion of Liberty is the same as theirs.
The Goldwater institute claims to be a public taxpayer watchdog group. Their current (March 2011) projects include;
1) Overturn the Clean Elections law that was voted on by the Citizens of AZ. This is a law that allows anyone to run for public office and receive public funds to do so. This was passed by the citizens of Arizona in an effort to give the everyday man the opportunity to run for office, not just the rich fat cats that have always run politics.
2) Threatening a law suit against the city of Glendale Arizona in an effort to prevent the city from selling bonds to facility a major sports team remaining in their city for 25 years, and boosting the local economy. This effort would have a detrimental effect on the local economy, and elimination almost a thousand (1,000) local jobs. GWI is stating that this is a violation of the “Gift Clause” in the AZ Constitution, even though four independent legal opinions state that it is not. GWI’s constitution law expertise can be called into question as well since their stance on school vouchers was found to be violation of the Arizona Constitution.
3) Overthrow the blanket of Socialism that is “Obamacare” – that is taken almost directly from a fund raising piece I received in the mail.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
I would not donate money to this organization. They state that the are a tax payer watchdog group and they are NOT.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
1.) I would remove Ms. Olsen from the position of CEO. 2.) I would ask anyone with a conflict of interest, or potential conflict of interest to step down from their current board positions. 3.) I would give people the opportunity to state that they want their donations to go towards a specific action.
