Review for PEQUANA PLAYHOUSE, Baudette, MN, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Pequana Playhouse does an amazing job when you consider the small population base from which to draw for performers, crews, audiences, and administrative activities, not to mention the fact that directors and accompanists are paid almost nothing and everyone else nothing at all. Pequana was born in 1982-83 in a tiny town in northern Minnesota (six hours to drive to or from Minneapolis/Saint Paul). It's nearly as far north as you can get and still be in the United States. Not many people live there, but it has been possible to assemble casts of 50 people for ambitious works such as "The Music Man", "Fiddler on the Roof", "The Miracle worker", "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", "The Sound of Music", and more. Audiences comment frequently on the skill and talent of the performers and crews. I've heard people from metropolitan areas remark that the show they saw here rivaled professional performances they had seen at home. I'm proud to be able to say that I've been a supporter and of Pequana for more than 25 years; I was present at its birth.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the joy and excitement of children who participate in the one-week annual children's theatre workshop every summer; and, in some cases, are so inspired they continue with drama as they grow up, some of them even receiving a Pequana scholarship as a result

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

institute clear policies and procedures for volunteers to follow.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

being on stage for performances.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very hard-working and fun to work with.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build a wonderful facility/theater and set up an endowment fund to help pay ongoing costs of the property.

Ways to make it better...

there was a facility where all of Pequana's equipment, supplies, and files could be kept. It would be even better if the facility could accommodate board meetings, a dance studio, and performances, as well as other community activities.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of volunteer time, money and facilities.

One thing I'd also say is that...

if each person who enjoys Pequana's activities, and/or is involved in any way, would volunteer an average of one hour a month and donate an average of $25 a year, the increase in quantity and quality of activities would be astonishing.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009

Role:  Board Member & Acted, sang, played guitar, treasurer, chair, secretary, grant writing, crew, probably everything there is to do.
